Mercy came calling today,
God knows I needed to see her
Courage left me out in the lane,
Beat up and runnin' without her

She told me sit down,
You made a mess of things
She was right
She said, you got to slow down,
Don' need ta stay out all night
Mercy

If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the color of the evening sun
Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay

Perhaps this final act was meant
To clinch a lifetime's argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star
Like tears from a star

On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are

Well, no one told me about her
The way she lied
Well, no one told me about her
How many people cried

But it's too late to say you're sorry
How would I know? Why should I care?
Please don't bother trying to find her
She's not there

Well, let me tell you 'bout the way she looked
The way she acts and the color of her hair
Her voice was soft and cool
Her eyes were clear and bright
But she's not there

She threw me outside,
I stood in the dirt where everyone walked
And after finding I’d forgotten my shirt
I went back and knocked
I waited in the hallway, she went to get it
And I tried to make sense
Out of that picture of you in your wheelchair
That leaned up against . . .

- Bob Dylan

She said it was just a figment of speech
and I said "You mean figure", and she said "No, figment",
because she could never imagine it happening, but it did...
...
I said: "I'm the most eligible bachelor in town!"
And she said: "Yeah - that's why I can never understand
any of those silly letters you send me."

- Billy Bragg

We chase misprintied lies
We face the path of time
And yet I fight this battle all alone,
No one to cry to; no place to call home

My gift of self is raped
My privacy is raked
And yet I find, repeating in my head,
"If I can't be my own, I'd feel better dead."

-Layne Staley

Having a bit of an Arctic Monkeys session...

And do me a favour, and ask if you need some help
She said, do me a favour and stop flattering yourself
-Do me a favour

And oh I'm so tense, never tenser
Could all go a bit Frank Spencer,
And I'm talking gibberish,
Tip of the tongue but I can't deliver it
-You probably couldn't see...

"There were moments of dreams
I was offered to save.
I lived less like a workhorse,
more like a slave.
I thought that one quick moment
that was noble or brave
would be worth the most of my life.

So I pointed my fingers
and shouted few quotes I knew,
as if something that's written
should be taken as true.
But every path I had taken
and conclusion I drew
would put truth back under the knife.

And now the only piece of advice that continues to help
is anyone that's making anything new only breaks something else." -When My Time Comes, Dawes

"And she thinks "most people don't talk enough about how lucky they are
Most people don't know what it takes for me to get through the day
Most people don't talk enough about the love in their hearts"
But she doesn't know most people feel that same way"- Most People, Dawes

Pretty much anything by that band, actually. And "Overkill" by Colin Hay.

Well, there's endless cool Rush lines I could talk about...

"Like a pair of vagabonds who wave between two passing trains
Or the glimpse of a woman's smile through a window in the rain" - Virtuality

"How many times do we tire of all the little battles?
Threaten to call it quits, tempted to cut and run
How many times do we weather out the stormy evenings
Long to slam the front door, drive away into the setting sun" - We Hold On

"In a world lit only by fire
A long train of flares under piercing stars
I stand watching the steam-liners roll by" - Caravan

"Any escape might help to smooth the unattractive truth, but the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth" - Subdivisions (one of many in that song)

etc...

But a recent favorite of mine is this guy:

"Come and stare, come and stare at her love through these eyes, from a mountain so high
Is it possible we've forsaken our mother?
Return to nowhere and nature will know my name
This is what it takes to feel at home
In her solace, beyond light is where I lay
I'll lay until the dusk of man" - Pale Aura by Periphery. Beautiful song.

"In '65 I was 17"

"In '69 I was 21"

If you know anything about what was happening in America in the '60s, these two short lines speak volumes. I would imagine it's especially poignant for those of you who came of age during those times.

Edit: The lines are from the Jackson Browne classic "Running On Empty."

"If her daddy's rich take her out for a meal, if her daddy's poor just do what you feel" - Mungo Jerry, In the Summertime.

And all the words to "Imagine" and "Yesterday" by The Beatles.

Gather your deeds and your possessions,
Whatever certainty you've known,
Forget your heroes,
You don't really need those last few lessons.

Stand in the open;
The next voice you hear will be your own.

Well alright, they knew how they could hurt you,
And you let them cut you to the bone.
But God forbid,
you allow them to rid you of your virtue!

Forget their laughter;
The next voice you hear will be your own.

Throw down your truth and check your weapons.
Don't look to see if you're alone,
Just stand your ground,
And don't turn around - whatever happens.

Don't ask directions;
The next voice you hear will be your own.

Some lyrics from The Who:

Ever since I was a young boy,
I've played the silver ball.
From Soho down to Brighton
I must have played them all.
But I ain't seen nothing like him
In any amusement hall...
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pin ball !

Out here in the fields
I fought for my meals
I get my back into my living
I don't need to fight
To prove I'm right
I don't need to be forgiven
Yeah, yeah, yeah ,yeah!

Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss

Is it me, for a moment...
Bell boy...
Love, reign o'er me...
Can you see the real me, can you, can you?

Mama's got a squeeze box
She wears on her chest
And when Daddy comes home
He never gets no rest
'Cause she's playing all night
And the music's all right
Mama's got a squeeze box
Daddy never sleeps at night
