I think the look you are trying to get was when he was playing an 80s Japanese Fender Jazz Bass Special with the black headstock, those came with no pickguard.

I prefer a J neck and the Rev's are pretty close. One of my friends has a Decision and I am very comfortable playing it. My Rumblefish is a J width at 1.5

I don't have much experience with the new Rev's, I play a Rumblefish PJ and have found it to be just as hot as an active bass. I thought the new ones were pretty much the same.

Great review! I have wanted one of these for awhile. Recently an older one with the reverse headstock(which I really like) turned up in the FaceBook marketplace near me but the funds were not available. And I really don't need another bass right now. one of these days though.
