    Italian and classical vocabulary

The answer would be.......it depends. Some bassists need it, some don't. Easy as that. But it can't hurt to know just a bit about the western classical tradition, as many other genres are inspired by this. Good to hear that you've learned someething from these classes!

do you really have to learn how to read music to be a good bassist?

I'm sorry, but your arguing against yourself here. In an earlier post you agree with me that being able to read ryth requires a grasp on some SN, but now you're saying that in your group none of the members have any SN skills, but you are still able to communicate SN note values. Not quite. A guitarist could ply the song in a correct form from the tab alone if he knew some standard notation. To read how to play the rythm of the song you need to have some knowlegde of how rythm is notated in standard notation.

do you really have to learn how to read music to be a good bassist?

Another thing that makes this kind of notation awkward to read is the fact that you actually have to learn hov rythms are written in SN before being able to play this. This means that you would have to learn SOME SN to be able to interpret this as the composer intended.... As for myself, I...

Did bass players used to tune half a tone lower?

Why is that such an odd thing to say? A trumpet is not necessarily a well-tempered instrument(as in wohltemperierte klavier), and certain notes are harder to play in tune than others...will try to explain more later.....need sleep now..

Did bass players used to tune half a tone lower?

Yup, that could be it. Try playing with a big band. All flat keys, all the time.:p If I'm not mistaken(I'm a horn player too), flat keys are not only easier to play, but sharp keys tend to sound just a little but off-pitch....depending on the skill level of the player of course....
