Those who have Dingwalls with these string retainers, do you have to thread your string through it? Or is it shaped more like a hook?

Our band plays in drop-D#0 but personally I'm really a fan of how my Dingwall sounds without the bridge cables :) I use the standard Dingwall 45-130 nickel plated set and apart from being like excellently cooked spaghetti it kills it both live and in studio

While we're talking about pickups, what's the technical difference between the "Neck" and "Middle"-style pickups? Are they reverse wound or something?

That's what the D-Roc has in its second position. I didn't really care for that tone tbh

On the NG3 the middle pickup is wired in parallel internally to make the bridge+middle position more balanced. On the D-Roc the neck pickup is wired in parallel internally to make the all-three-on setting more balanced.

I might be in the minority here, but especially with the SJ body shape I feel like the 3 pickup look doesn't fit the bass at all. To me those three big soapbar-style pickup covers all together really mess with the lines of the body.
