Also sounds like it's kind of the typical build time then, 3-4 (ish) months. That's alright by me. Heck, maybe some sanity will prevail somehow and the tariff BS will stop by then.

Similar situation.
3-4 months when it’s a rush priority as they want you to love your new dingwall.
I had a special situation where I got to bond with v1 while V2(real V1) was under construction. This was then challenging to relinquish.. and then to top it, later it came back. Long story, mostly mentioned here.

That said, I imagine you’ll be hitting the wood room again. Sorry that’s how it turned out. I can relate but in the end I guess I kinda just got to spec 2 rad basses with one build spot. lol.

It seems quite common that the cosmetic aspects of custom builds don't turn out like ordered. I imagine that being a tough situation when you have already chosen your favourite top wood and all. I can't say that would encourage me to order a customized build.

To be clear, I didn't intend to talk down about the finish itself. I have a pretty good amount of woodworking experience, though not with instruments (yet -- someday). Even with what I do, getting something from my own brain down into the wood doesn't always work out. Add in the complexity of putting that "thing I see in my brain" into "words on an order form", then have someone else read those words, interpret them, all added on top of the nature of it, adds for a lot of possible points where things go sideways.

And honestly, if I didn't have a pretty specific idea in mind for the top and finish, this build would've been really, really appealing. Since it's quite possible, due to pricing involved, this is my "final" custom order that I place directly, I want to get it as close to the vision I had in my head for it. Unfortunately for me, my rigid-ness in that thought means a rebuild. Less picky folks likely would not run into this.

Hi, I was about to order one before I went for a super P used.

As I understood, they are all sold already. However, they are sold to stores, so some stores will have them available. I know bass freaks from Belgium has some basses reserved to them, maybe try there, or look around to see if more European stores are expecting them.

I don't think there was any tariff on Canadian made musical instruments coming into the US. I think the 10% baseline tariff remains. Honestly, it changes so frequently that I don't think the experts can keep up with it. Have to just wait and see what I'm charged when my bass is ready.

I have a question for experienced Dingwall owners 😂,

I bought an NG3 that I simply adore. I like everything about It. The feel, the sound, the growl, the weight…
I have a Sp1 coming too! AND I also have a reserved spot for a Canadian custom Dingwall in approx. 10 months.

I like my NG3 so much that I don't know if I should go with a Canadian version of my NG3 or simply go with a complete different one.
Since building basses is not my job and since I do not have Sheldon's knowledge, I am afraid I may not like my custom Dingwall as much as my NG3.

Based on YouTube videos, the other Dingwall that I like tonewise, is the Maple neck version of the John Taylor Rio bass. Oh yeah, George Baldwin’s bass tone too!!

For the ones, who owns a few Dingwall basses, what are your suggestions? What would you do?

I'd talk to a knowledgeable dealer and come prepared with examples of things you like and things you dislike. Bring as many video, or better, high quality audio, examples. Photos of finishes you like. What band(s)/recording/performance do you do and where does the NG do well and not well for you in those situations?

Also, there's absolutely nothing wrong if the NG3 just works for you. They're very capable instruments on their own. If it works for you and you're itching for a 2nd Dingwall, going with a Combustion or a JT might be a cheaper (and faster) ticket. They'll still be different from your NG in many ways, but avoid the cost of entry on a Canadian.

In the end, it's a decision only you can make for yourself. Lots of folks here have experience with overseas vs Canadian - myself included - but it's pretty difficult to simply tell someone else precisely what to do, especially if they're so enamored by an NG already.

All that aside, my opinion... I wouldn't just carbon copy an NG with a Canadian model. The differentiation just wouldn't be enough, unless you really really want the same exact thing just in a special finish or fancy top wood. For me, the Z neck is absolutely where it's at and that currently isn't available in a production model. Plus the top wood choices and finish choices make it a no brainer for me.

I could easily be wrong, but I don’t think the Canadian shop makes NG, Combustion or JT models. I thought all these were produced over seas. As well as the Drocs. Not that the imports aren’t excellent basses. I’m super impressed with my import Dbird.

I thought the Canadian shop made Afterburners, Z’s, Sklars, and custom Drocs.

So you might be looking at an afterburner instead of an NG.

Me, I just keep an eye on the classifieds, and reverb, and other places for used Dingwalls. They come and they go, Supers, AB’s, a Dbird, 4,5, and six strings.
They have all been excellent. Seven have come in, three remain. Since 2009 I’ve been thrilled with every Dingwall I’ve had.

Turns out I really like four strings, so I have an AB-1, Super P and the Dbird. I love the lines of the Afterburners, they are my favorite body style, and tend to be very light. The Supers are fantastic. All four strings have 19mm string spacing. The Supers feel very compact compared to the longscale basses.

My point is that buying and selling used Dingwalls has let me sample a wide range. And they easily sell for what I spend on them, they really hold their values.

If I went all in on a custom, besides the premium price, there would be a long wait. And I’d feel committed. Or my wife would have me committed.

If I keep an eye on the used market, that next Dingwall could pop up any day. And be here a few days after I hit the buy button. The hunt, luck of the draw, and instant gratification. That’s my speed. So many beautiful Dingwalls to try.

You are right. I am looking into an afterburner with Ng or JT specs. They do not make Canadian NGs, and the Canadian JTs are sold out.

there are 2 options I am actually thinking about.
1) afterburner 1, mahogany body, Maple neck and fb, FD3 pups, Neve preamp. It will be close to what I have but probably with a sweetness the NG doesn’t have.

2) afterburner 2, Chambered walnut, ovangkol/wenge neck, FDV + Neve.
Différent feel and flavor, way better looking 😂

I did 3 band practices so far. Every other band member prefers the NG over my Warwick corvette. We play pop, rock, and some prog rock. The NG fits well tonewise in all styles. I use all of the positions on the switch, which surprises me. I use to hate MM’s tone. Dingwall’s MM tone has a flavor that I appreciate in certain situations. I am using the preamp 50-60% of the time, that surprises me too. I am used to play a passive Warwick exclusively.

In the end, I am not asking you guys what to do. I guess my question is, when buying a new bass, do you prefer to stay in a similar path and feel tonally or you tend to prefer having instruments that are different tone or feel wise?

I always only had 1 bass at the time, rarely 2 because a passive Warwick corvette was all I needed until I hurt my back and tried a Dingwall 😂

I had no intention to buy an NG until I tried the one I have now. I wanted a Canadian afterburner from the start because I wanted it to be exceptional. I got my NG in a trade. I simply love it, hence why I wanted to copy it.

Will reading your reply, I realized that there are a few things I can change in the specs so it could be similar but with a slightly different feel.

My Ultimate Dingwall would be a Z4 but they don’t produce them. It would be nice if Z basses would be available as a production model too!

I agree with others not to duplicate your NG3 with a custom build. The key part of a custom spec is really knowing what you want and what spec will get you there. The NG3 is a well made and very capable bass. One inexpensive mod which warms it up and makes it more versatile is adding a passive tone control like the one shown in this post. I use mine all the time.

+1 ^^ Passive tone is the missing piece from the DGTC and makes it much more versatile. I did this passive tone mod on my NG3 and also on a non-Dingwall bass with a Dark Glass pre. It works very well. I was able to find a set of matching stacked knobs which might be harder to find for a Super J.

Have you seen the Fastlane model? Kinda production, kinda custom. Not sure if the model is going to go ahead or not.

EDIT: My bad, you're talking Z, I'm thinking ABZ but that's an Afterburner. So, disregard.
