So I reached out to Dingwall tech about the pickups on the SJ5 I just purchased off of Reverb.Looks like I'll be adding toggles.

"Thanks for reaching out. The 3x pickup configuration is internally wired as follows.
-Neck wired in series
-Middle wired in parallel
-Bridge wired in series

+1 ^^ Passive tone is the missing piece from the DGTC and makes it much more versatile. I did this passive tone mod on my NG3 and also on a non-Dingwall bass with a Dark Glass pre. It works very well. I was able to find a set of matching stacked knobs which might be harder to find for a Super J.

I think you could do this by installing a 4-way two pickup switch in a 3-pickup bass. Connect the bridge pickup to its normal set of terminals, then route the hot and neutral wires from the neck and mid pickups to a DPDT selector switch on a push/pull pot. The switch position selects either neck or mid pickup wires to the 2nd set of terminals on the 4-way switch. This would give you these 7 options with the 4 positions:
1. B solo
2. N or M in series with B
3. N or M in parallel with B
4. N or M solo

Nice, I want the same thing! Two (probably dumb) questions:
1) If I'm happy with the stock quad-option pickup selector, can the stacked volume-tone knob be installed on its own? Or is there something different about the six-way selector that makes the passive tone knob possible?
2) Does the tone knob also work in active mode i.e. you can mess with the Darkglass EQ knobs and also roll off the tone?

In addition to using ACG EQ-01 before I used to have an Alembic Series 1 and Europa plus a Wal Mk2. I like the tone of the Wal more vs the Series 1. I did like the Europa setup (filter + 2 band EQ) too though.

I wouldn't say it's "the" way to do it. I'm sure there's alternate paths as well. I talked to... I forget, one of the filter pre people (not ACG, either Lusithand or Underhill) about making something that'll take 3 inputs, but it gets REALLY difficult and wild to implement in every aspect. The Single NFP is pretty small and self contained, the only real "problem" you run into is slightly more complex power routing (and power draw) when running multiple pres.

The stacked volume/tone is independent from the selector switch. I just chose to also have the 6-way switch installed. The passive tone works in both active and passive modes. It tames the upper mid in a good way where you can have presence without that harsh edge. With neck/bridge in parallel the passive tone can take the edge off. With mid/bridge in series cut the low mids at 500 Hz, tone full on to preserve the highs, and a slight boost in upper mids to keep the tone focused but not too mid-humped. Lots of subtle adjustments to sculpt your tone…

Nice. Yeah a passive tone control on the DGTC would be awesome. Nice solution. That's why I would pick a Glock if I had to choose. But I would have mismatched knobs on my SJ5 if I went with your solution - 4 Canadian "rubber" knobs (which I like) and a metal stacked knob. My OCD would not allow that :)

I have never owned a Dingwall, but I’m strongly considering getting one of the new SP-1 basses. I have owned some Strandbergs, and even tho they are really good, the QC can be a little hit-and-miss. I mean, good enough for a standard instrument, but when you pay a premium, you expect premium quality. The Strandbergs are made in Indonesia btw, probably by Cort. My question is; is the quality control on Dingwall overseas basses? Tight neck pockets? No tool marks? Good fret levelling etc? Any insight is much appreciated!

Dingwall is the only company that I have complete confidence in to deliver a satisfying instrument in all respects. Fit, finish, comfort, and awesome tonal palette. :cool:

Dingwall quality control is on another level. All import basses are not only meticulously inspected but partially disassembled, reassembled and set up in house. I’ve bought many new Dingwalls over the years, both imports and domestic, and have never had a QC issue. The tolerances are very tight and the setups spot on. I would have no reservations ordering a SP-1.

Cool! Even though I’m not a huge fan of preamps on basses for live playing, I spec’d my upcoming 5 string with a Neve preamp.
This one is supposed to be “the modern 5 string bass”, so adding a preamp seemed like the right choice.

I decided to go for the Neve, because:
1) Well, it’s a Neve preamp 😂
2) The Passive tone control
3) How musical it sounds even with the treble & bass boosted all the way up

My SJ4XXX came the the Darkglass preamp which I planned on removing until I played it at practice - it's not going anywhere...It's the first bass I've bought with a preamp in over a decade
