Dingwall Owners Club

Which push/pull pot did you try to install? When I was modding the heck out of my purple NG3, I originally planned on using a CTS push/pull from StewMac, and it didn’t fit (too close to the cavity wall), and I ended up using a Bourns push/pull.
It was just the regular 500k push pulls either from stewmac or bestbassgear. I'll keep the Bourns in mind for the future

I saw the recent Kiesel release and at first I thought it was a headless Dingwall. Definitely "borrowing" heavily there
Yeah, they don't have to say that it's a Dingwall copy. YouTubers will do that for them. Unless Dingwall trademarked the design and layout, I guess Kiesel isn't doing anything illegal. Kiesel likes to borrow other's IP and then cry when another manufacturer makes a guitar with a bevel on top similar to their designs. Oh well, like him or hate him Jeff Kiesel has kept the lights on.

Got the new La Bella flats for multiscale installed! 20250107_121143.jpg

First thoughts compared to the Payson flats- main thing I noticed is much more bottom and thump out of the package. The Paysons are 120-40, the La Bella set is 128-104-82-60-43. Excellent feel on the fingers, not too loose or stiff. They remind me a lot of the "new version" Sadowsky blue labels before Roger switched production to Warwick.

Since I roll off my passive tone and solo the SF2 neck pup for reggae (passive mode, not active), the LB's were a bit more muddy than I expected. I've had great results with rounds and flats using 4/32" treb, 5/32" bass as my benchmark pickup height (top of pickup to bottom of string, last fret fretted). I dropped the pups a full 1/32" on both sides and bam- there is the beef, clarity and just singing tone im looking for. Something to keep in mind if you try out these strings and aren't getting the sound you expect. Of course with that EQ adjustments were necessary as well. So far I'm digging them. 3 hr gig this Sunday to really break them in.

Hoping to check out an SP1 at NAMM, just got my registration info for the show!

My metal band Door 13 is playing a NAMM after party on Friday, Jan 24th at the Grand Theater across from the convention. I'll be playing my 6 string Z3. Hit me up for discount tickets if any of you want to go!

I totally agree with what he’s saying but the bonus suggestion of learning to play by ear resonates the most for me.

For me, I have struggled with playing by ear for decades. I still suck at it, but I've made the biggest advances by listening for chord changes rather than the particular note that is being played.

Yeah I'm not really seeing the similarities, outside of both being multi-scale (though different scales) and 3x pickups. Otherwise they're different beasts in every way. I do hate to admit it though, Kiesel does actually offer more in the way of custom options than Dingwall presently can/will. I've gone through a couple bass designs and guitar designs on their online builder. Definitely not going to buy a bass, but, a guitar is quite possible. Probably better to take talks of Kiesel to their own thread though :D

Nice Video on YouTube from IvanBassist.

Great thoughts … music offers everyone an a lifetime of learning.

I watched the 2025 launch vid and then listened to some soundclips and found the pickups to sound heavily scooped.

Also, heard from a former Kiesel endorser who now plays Dingwall that the build quality is a night and day difference.

I have no direct experience, though. You rarely see the instruments here in Germany.

I wasn’t trying to stir up any serious comparisons, it was a few photos I saw scrolling and really the three slanted pickups I instantly think Dingwall. Was excited we’d see some headless action.

Have never seen a Kiesel or heard one played in real life.

Excited for NAMM tho!

That's what really freed me up when playing bass to songs I don't know, although I'm actually looking for openings to support the song rather than thinking about chordal underpinnings.
Makes it much more fun than having to worry about what the guitarist is playing.

Trying to understand the way my NG3 is wired. Since each pickup is split coil that is internally wired in series? So when Neck and bridge is soloed, they are in series. Jazz mode is both wired together in parallel. Bridge and middle are both wired together in series.

Do I have that right?
On the NG3 the middle pickup is wired in parallel internally to make the bridge+middle position more balanced. On the D-Roc the neck pickup is wired in parallel internally to make the all-three-on setting more balanced.

Makes me wonder how bridge and middle would sound wired together in parallel (if both were wired internally in series). Seems like that would keep all positions better volume matched?
