Dingwall Owners Club

Did a very quick and dirty test. Would not call this conclusive by any means. I pulled a couple 9v battery clips out, made a series harness from them. Then I pulled the battery cover, both batteries, and plugged the new harness into one of the two battery clips. Lil bit hokey but functional. Played a bunch of riffs from a fill-in I'm doing in a few weeks. I played through my Fractal AX8 into my wireless IEMs, into my 64Audio A6 IEMs - basically my "light portable show" rig.
Then I yanked the harness, put both batteries in as normal, and played the same thing.
Seat of the pants... I could not tell a difference. This is for songs that run the gamit from djent-y grind with pick to pretty clean finger tones, so it got a good grab bag of changes in there. Mostly used middle solo (probably 50% of the time), 3x pickups (25%), and a little bit of M+B.

I think if I wanted to really get particular about it, I'd breadboard up a switching mechanism and switch it back and forth more in real time than the way I did it. Probably would also be worth recording. But I really couldn't tell enough difference with this method to put that effort in, and time is pretty limited at the moment. If I couldn't notice a change in under an hour when running the same material and everything else being the same, that fails the "worth it" test and I don't actually personally care if I could pick out a slight difference in a graph or solo recording.

I went into this with an expectation too, so that could be playing a part.

Edit: Now that I'm thinking more about it, I have my bench DC power supply I could've just wired up and fed it everything between 9v and 18v DC just to see. Alas, I didn't have that clarity of thought beforehand.
Thank you for that!

For a long time I was keeping one of my Dingwalls tuned to F#. It was one of my older AB1s. I kept it in F# for some of my own compositions (which I never seem to make enough time for), and general "just in case". I even worked with Payson on early iterations of his first F# strings, which was pretty cool to do. Somewhere around 2021 that bass turned into my electronic test mule, so it went back to B standard and mostly just sits there unplayed unless I'm tinkering with some mad scientist crap.

Fast forward to about a week ago. Another local bassist (who shall remain anonymous for now) reached out to me about a fill in gig that was just about a month away. I listened to what I could online and set things up to talk to them, see what's up, and get moving on the material for it.
Turns out, nearly all of it is in drop F. Or at least, I think it is. My transcription skills aren't super great and doubly so when tuned that low. But I'm making due, though in some spots I'm kind of guessing at what should be there. We'll have all of two rehearsals the week of show to unscrew anything they don't like.

Music is... tough to place in a genre. Stabbing Westward with hefty doses of Lincoln Park, P.O.D., and various djent-y influences as well. Tone sculpting will be fun once I get myself there - lots of grind, but a lot of clean sections, and a lot that falls somewhere in the middle of that.

Honestly, just makes me appreciate my Dingwalls even more though. That test mule AB1 is still retired from performance, so, the AB1 6 string is getting the call up for this. I generally don't play that one live - it's more for recording and composing - but I don't want to mess with the setups on my Zs (plus one is presently out on loan) or Prima right now, especially for a one-off fill gig. Using a 6 string for this is pretty overkill, too.

A bit under 3 weeks left to the show. I meet some of the dudes in the band tomorrow, and get to talk shop, show, and some questions I have, plus just general "Get to know" time. Honestly looking forward to tomorrow, and the show. The more I listen to the music for the set, the more I'm digging it, even though it's a bit of a departure from what I'd probably normally be attracted to playing.

I'm really loving my NG, makes me want to buy a Super J with the 3 pickup system for standard tuning. If they were FD3 pickups and the same rotary switch, would it sound like an NG3? Or is pickup location different?

I'm really blown away by how nice it feels tension wise with the fanned frets. Can't believe I never tried one sooner. And I feel completely adjusted to the fret angle, actually feel it makes me position my wrist in a better position anyway

Consider me a new fan!

Glad to hear you’re enjoying your new bass :)

Both my Super J and Super P feel as if they had slightly higher string tension compared to the NG3 I currently have on loan from a friend. It’s not much, but noticeable.

I’m not sure if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Also, happy new year, everyone 🎉

How similar are the sounds of the different pickup positions between your Super J and the NG3?

They’re definitely in the same ballpark, but the NG has better clarity due to the extended scale length. The SJ sounds more traditional.

Maybe this helps:

Apologize if this has been asked & answered earlier in this thread:

Can any of y'alls who own a 5-string Afterburner, Z, Prima, or ABZ give me an idea of what your bass weighs?

(I know, that's the first question out of every TB members' mouth, so it must have already been asked here! mea culpa)

Thanks

There's an entire spreadsheet on it.
@shade_1313 put this together and various folks gave him our weights to put in

Whoa! Thanks!
Glad it’s coming in handy.

When I first got the data together, the things that struck me were that there were some trends, but that the strongest trend lines were connected to number of strings more than model of bass. The second thing was that there are always outliers, for virtually every model, string count, etc.

Also, late this year, early next, I’ll be taking in data again, looking for any basses that people have acquired since the first round of data, and for any new members who weren’t around for round one. The timing of a new round is, well, fixed to when my forthcoming AB2 gets built and comes to me.

Must have missed this. Happy to contribute my outlier well in advance:

AB2-6, swamp ash body, quilted maple top, roasted ash neck, wenge board, Glock, 3xFDV, series/parallel - 8.125 lbs.

Others:

SJ-5, swamp ash body (chambered), redwood top, maple neck, birdseye maple board, Glock, 2xSuper Fatty, series/parallel, hipshot - 8.131 lbs.
Z2-5, swamp/northern ash body, quilted maple top, wenge neck, wenge board, Glock, 2xFD3, series/parallel, hipshot - 9.038 lbs.

Apologies if this has been discussed to death already. I've done some searching but it's difficult to track down what I'm looking for with so many similar search terms...

SJ w/ P-Tone neck vs SP w/ Split P. Would anyone mind potentially rehashing the similarities/differences for me? I'm positive there are forum members here who have experience with both.

Don’t have direct experience with a P-tone in the neck position of a SJ, but the pickup position is different for the D and G strings. That would change the tone a bit, but the pickup should get you in the ballpark of a P-bass, though.

Has anyone had the experience with P-Tones, at least on 5 strings that the B and E strings are considerably louder than the A, D and G strings?
Yes - have been rehearsing with a 70s/80s/90s cover band and I've been using my ABZ with a P-tone in the neck for most of what we play. Glock preamp...pushing mids a bit and dropping the bass does help. I haven't change pickup heights but will probably mess with it a bit.

About to get some dress up time with a new set of strings for the fill-in gig. Was actually surprised as how playable F standard was on a string set that was made for Drop A tuning. It'll be even better with fat strings on there. Excited for the first show of the year!

Weird optical illusion in this picture. The left-most string seems to disappear. ;)
