Which Bassists were your inspiration when you started playing?

Flea, Duff McKagan, Billy Cox, and Tina Weymouth.

I swear I'm not a bad band member!

In my younger days, I once used that line in a job interview. The HR person goes “So you tell people you’re less capable than you are. Interesting. Why?” I was inexperienced, stumbled over my response and didn’t get the job. I never really knew, but was sure it was because of that exchange...

"Esperanza Spalding Is The 21st Century's Jazz Genius"

At first glance it seems impossible. However there is one name that stands above all others. That name: Kennth Gorelick. Seriously though, you’re right. There are at least a dozen names that could be mentioned in a discussion for that title.

"Esperanza Spalding Is The 21st Century's Jazz Genius"

Undoubtedly we have different tastes, but not in this matter. I think Esperanza’s albums are okay, but not great. They just don’t hit me on an emotional level. However, I think she’s very talented, and I also think she’s earned and deserves her level of success and popularity.

"Esperanza Spalding Is The 21st Century's Jazz Genius"

That’s true, but most of his more interesting quotes in that article are made after he’s aware of who he’s talking about.

"Esperanza Spalding Is The 21st Century's Jazz Genius"

I agree. And this is part of the reason I agree. Even a talented female musician will deal with “only because she’s a woman” or “just because she’s good looking” and the like. It may not be as difficult for a woman to get a chance as it used the be, but they still have a harder time earning...

"Esperanza Spalding Is The 21st Century's Jazz Genius"

This is exactly why I’d love to see her live. Pretty much everything I’ve heard about her live performances indicates that she’s amazing.

"Esperanza Spalding Is The 21st Century's Jazz Genius"

+1. Would love to see her live though. Here’s an interesting [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], in which he describes her playing as pointless. He also dogs on Stanley Clarke, and calls Herbie Hancock crap. He comes off a bit of a jerk, but I thought it was kind of funny.

Things I Like that are Questionable

Billy Joel Mazda mx-5 (I know, I know, it’s a Miata) And, since I’m a native Midwesterner, the San Francisco Giants.

Do you set up your own bass?

I started playing later in life, and didn’t know much (anything) about setup. Shortly after I bought my bass, I was at a musician neighbors house just hanging, listening to music, and jamming (as far as I’m capable anyway). Anyhow, he tells me he thinks my intonation is off. I didn’t know what...

Things any good bassist should be able to do.

Nice post, and good advice. If I may: why is it important the instrument be a p-bass? I can understand not showing up with something radical, like a space bass, or maybe even a thunderbird, but not why a p is preferable to any “normal looking bass” such as a j or even something like a sound...

    Mosquitoes management...

I’m vegetarian, and I’d encourage anyone thinking of going that route to do so, I’ve not noticed a significant reduction in mosquito encounters.

    Mosquitoes management...

I also use a fan on the patio to keep mosquitoes down. I’ve got a shirt and bandanna that are infused with permethrin, that are okay for keeping mosquitoes away, although not as effective as spray. I’ve tried a thermacell, but didn’t have much luck with it.

    * * * Best frontman/solo artist in rock -- THE FINAL POLL * * *

Bruce Springsteen - the only one that I’ve actually seen perform, great band leader, high energy shows that go ~3 hours, and has the whole stadium at full attention. Michael Jackson - I’ve only seen videos, but I’ve never seen any other performer have audiences respond like he did. Mick...

    * * EVENTUAL POLL -- past or present, greatest frontman or solo artist of all time?

+1 for Bruce Springsteen. If being part of a musical force that lasts for decades wasn’t part of the criteria, I’d go with Jimi Hendrix.
