    Jazz Audition reject

I would hardly consider that Hard Bop is beginner friendly. The changes are often complex and sophisticated, and more often than not played at fast tempos. And no, I'm not one of these "theory is useless" guys advocating so called freedom, I actually said that theory is indeed important and...

    Jazz Audition reject

I understand that reading might be important for some, but why is it so hard for these same people to imagine that some are doing just fine without it ? When playing Jazz, you're mostly improvising, ie. playing something that is NOT WRITTEN. In that case, why would reading be that important ...

    Jazz Audition reject

I only played in quartet, and we always exchanged ideas by playing them to the other members. If we played a non original tune then we'd get familiar with it by listening to the recording. And if you're a decent jazz musician it should not take you hours to figure out a lick by ear on your...

    Jazz Audition reject

Well the first thing I wrote in this post is "Of course everyone has his own definition of jazz" and I added "in my book" in the paragraph you quoted, so what I said is nothing more than my own opinion and was not meant to be presented as a fact.

Of course everyone has his own definition of jazz. A jazz tune is made of chord changes and a melody or head. You don't need to read the notes to comp or improvise on changes, you can just read the chord symbols (you of course have to know what to do with them but that's another topic)...

Well it's easy to learn shapes that help you see the basic notes that can fit the chord, for an A7 chord you can use the A myxolydian mode as a basis, then if you are a more advanced player you can add outside notes to your taste. I think it's very helpful to know theory when you're playing...

I don't understand why you would need to be able to read in order to be in a jazz band. 99% of the time the chords names are written above the staff, so if you see A7 and know how to play it on your bass, what's preventing you from playing a fitting bassline ?

Cort Action basses: they play incredible!!!

I think they're very underrated. When it comes to entry level basses Squire and SX are the names that come up the most, but Cort Action basses are also very good. I have an Action V and it's a very nice playing bass.

Upgrade for a jazz bass : new pickups or preamp ?

I have a Classic Vibe JB, and I would like to have a more defined sound, especially when rolling off the tone knob. With the actual configuration, the sound gets muddy easily if I try to smooth it out. More tonal options would be cool too, the only sounds I like to use right now are the bridge...

Am I getting weird, or are these cool?

I think they look awful, but I admire the creativity that has been put into them.

    Question about 70's pickup placement...

I tried doing a search on this topic but couldn't find an answer to my question. I really prefer "round" sounding jazz basses tones, and I'm not very found of the very trebly and aggressive ones. Problem is I really like the way the jb classic 70's looks, compared to the classic 60's which...

Bass for playing deep house/nu jazz

Thanks for the replies ! I still can't get that tone with my jazz. Here's the problem : to get that nice slight growl, I have to add some mids. But when I do it also adds some sort of "zing" to the sound, which is not what I'm looking for. Even when rolling the highs off it's still there...
