Huge tonal differences, EQ, weight, looks/finish, types of wood, tuners, pickups, neck widths, scale lengths, # of strings, bridges, etc. Of course, a $4000 boutique bass will (well, SHOULD) have better craftsmanship than a $200 assembly line bass.

I don't think you could go wrong with a P-bass or a Ric for Indie.

I've got a GSR200, it's ugly, but it's durable and the sound is horrible. It's a good backup bass.

I've played many 4 strings and only a few 5ers, but it seems as though the spacing on the 5ers is a little more condensed to limit neck size.
