I use(d) Sunbeams on my Musicman basses and a Jazz for when I require rounds. Decided to try these on a whim and wow, these may be the rounds I was after. They are subdued like I am after w/ rounds but not too much. The other coated (Elixers) and Pressure wounds I tried always had me grabbing my...
Both are a great choice. TIs are absolutely great on a P-bass. They cut better than any other flatwound I have tried on that bass. Plus, as mentioned, they don't sound like a true flat. In fact mine pack a mid centric puch great for many things. In fact I did a fill in w/ a band that played some...
I have four fenders w/ flats and two musicmans w/ rounds. I use the Fenders for almost everything except some rock stuff. It is nice to have both and I consider it necessary at times BUT to answer your question, I am a minority amongst most working bass players I run into. I see rounds...
As said the highway one pickups are not much different from other American Fender pick ups. I actually think they are not too bad. Before replacing the pickups I would consider replacing the 'Grease Bucket' and putting in a standard cap. That may make all the difference and is a much much...
The 'aqua green' leads me to believe that they are indead stock fender strings. The ball ends are actually vintage custom paint colours. The aqua green would be 'seafoam green' the red 'Fiesta red' etc etc. Do they look like these 1950 dupont colours or just standard?
I use Labellas ans TI Flats on my P-basses and love it. And I grew up in an era of round wound pop and clank. It is refreshing to hear a Pino like sound dominating R&B these days. I also use and get away with using this set up on ALMOST everything.
As far as straight Stainless steel rounds go, they are pretty damn smooth. If you wish to move into fairy land with me get some sunbeams, much smoother, but more mids and less zip. So..its you fingers or the zip! You decide.
mmbongo has summed it up perfectly for you. I have tried both on the same MM Sterling I own. He is right on the mark. The sunbeams have more midrange, most definately. The fatbeams, more high end pop but more mid range emphasis than your regular highbeams. I like sunbeams and nickel roundwounds...
Your bass will be fine. I currently have a set on my Am. Std. Precision. I did not have to file the nut or anything so drastic. However, full set up will be required, as with any new set of strings. As said above though they are extremely tense and a heavy gauge. If they do not fit your playing...
I am sorry that I cannot claim to have experience with that preamp configuration, BUT with TIs I do think that that set up will NOT get you the Motown thump. Its in the nature of the TIs which I believe will overshadow any preamp. They are an unique beast. They are pretty much a round minus the...
The TIs do not sound like a classic flat if that is sound you are after. They sound great, but if you are looking to emulate old school flat sounds/tone they don't do it. That said they are to my ear an exceptional sounding and playing string. They just don't thump like dead LaBellas or Fenders...
Disheartening to hear this. I have recently changed to LaBella after using TIs for years. TI CS was top notch though I like the La Bella sound and feel at my fingertips much better. That said, out of the 4 sets I have ordered and used I received no duds and no problems. I have even restrung a...
I mainly play flats, but for the modern rock stuff I have to play to make enough $$ (what a cruel world it is!) I use DR Sunbeams. I actually enjoy them quite a bit. I use them on Musicman Basses and they sound sound great. They would pass on my Fenders too if I didn't have a love for flatwounds...
The statements above are sound. I would like to add that the TIs, because of their emphasised midrange/roundwound sounding sounding characteristics, are a pretty versitile flat wound. I can get away - if that is the right notion - with playing them across a wide variety genres. I can usually...
I had GHS precisions on a bass which I now have the Labella FLs on. If there is a difference it is negligible to me. IMHO the Labellas sound a little more like the classic flat we are so used to hearing on those old records. Thus it will come down to sound your after as their playability will...
