    Wood Identification

The bark looks like ash to me. If so, it is a tough wood to work with—very hard and that twisty grain is difficult to do anything with.

Aguilar db751 owners - please tell me they're no good...

I agree. The 751 is a beast. I'd go for it.

Help me out, used Peavey Cirrus or new Peavey Grind?

Go for the used Cirrus. I've had two of them—a four string fretted and a five-string fretless, played the hell out of both of them and they were both extremely solid. Love the 35" scale, no neck problems at all. Plus the stock pickups have a very nice growl to them. Go for it!

    The Major Fourth

It'd easier than you think. A fourth is always a perfect fourth but when it's used with a major chord—first, third & fifth—it is a suspended fourth. This is a powerful passing chord often used in church music. The main deal is the fourth is the root of the 4 chord, as in 1-4-5 rock 'n roll...

    Roscoe Build G072

It's gonna be a beaut! They are such fine basses, fretted and fretless. Such a joy to play.

What am I doing wrong, difficulty getting highs out of envelope filters?

If you don't mind having 2 filters on your board, that's a good way to go. Another thing to investigate is how the envelope filter works with other effects—perhaps a distortion or an octave pedal or even a chorus—because the two together change the sound of the envelope filter a good bit...

What am I doing wrong, difficulty getting highs out of envelope filters?

I don't think you should have to make any changes on your board for a solo or a different song. You shouldn't have to bend down wearing your bass to fiddle with knobs in a stage's dim lighting! Or mess with your amp either. The effect should be dialed in so that it does what you want it to do...

    A Little Roscoe Fun

Steve, I have a Roscoe LG standard 5 fretless that weighs 7.4 lbs! Amazing—it almost floats. It has Spanish cedar body, quilted maple top, unlined pau ferro board. It has a VERY woody sound, very upright sounding especially playing in the mid positions. It might be up for sale since I have...

    Identify this wood?

That top shot of the "forearm" part of the body sure does look like spruce.

    Identify this wood?

That top piece sure looks like sycamore to me. But I'm probably wrong.

Dave, I have a set of Nordstrand NJ5FS installed in my redwood century custom that I got from Greg. I got the bass and the replacement pups from Greg. The bass came with Barts and an Aggie OBP-3 preamp. The Barts were a bit pingy but the Nordstrands are perfect to my ears. And the pole...
