Have we mentioned the P-bass sounds good with flats? Chromes for me on the American Special. Also on my fretless MIM jazz. The Squier P strung BEAD has GHS flats now but would do much better with LaBella flats.

I just filed down the nut slots in the existing nut on my Squier, put in BEAD strings and works fine. Tuning, string height, intonation all with no problems. However, to the original poster, I have to ask... do you REALLY want to make changes to a 40 year-old Fender?!? Keeping them original...

Agreed. For me it was as simple as filing the nut to a larger string size. My Squier PJ intonated fine with the Gotoh bridge. (and there is a BEAD string club now, I think I am number 8)
