There are several nitrocellulose lacquers available, each with distinctive characteristics. Some are softer and "breathe" as the wood swells and contracts with the changes in atmosphere so it is less likely to check. Others are hard and brittle(-ish). Behlen Nitrocellulose Stringed Instrument...
