Personally I'm not getting a lot out of the "you can't possibly be hearing that" angle. Or the "there's no such thing" one. There are sufficient timbral and spacial cues to distinguish the presence of more than one source, at least in the absence of walls. This thread has helped me make sense of...

Playing Keyboard Through Your Bass Rig?

I've most often worked with a keyboardist who played bass on the keys. I've found that a really good bass setup is not significantly different from a really good keys setup. Both are crazy clean and LOTS of headroom. But keys bass goes deeper than a 4 string. I've used a couple Acme Low B2 cabs...

    Ampeg V4 Club

This knob is so curious. Who would mix a clean tone with a distorted one for guitar? The dynamics of playing with the two tones are completely different. Nonetheless, it is useful for some really odd vibe, especially if the midrange is cranked (you get what, 15 dB of boost!) and the power amp...

I'm a huge fan of Leslies, and have actually put a lot of time into speaker animation, with some really rewarding and inspirational results. In the guitar frequency range though, a piece of cake compared to real bass. And I've spent hours entertaining myself with all kinds of animated sounds-...

It's stuffed with that white fiberglas substitute. I've read that real fiberglas is far preferable, but I hate that stuff... I also read that long haired wool is the best of all, and as it happens I have some right handy... washed, so it's not all greasy... I'll try replacing the stuffing.

    Ampeg V4 Club

I had a bunch of these- ok, just 3, and a couple SVT's, and a V2- and they sure needed repaired a lot. I think in part this was because I had too many, and they tended to sit around unused and no electronics really like that. I think if I had one I used steadily it would have been happy. Then...

Thanks again- I especially appreciate the illustration. I know one function of the bracing is to push the resonant frequencies of the panels up out of the boomy range. I'm thinking this must be why I'm hearing the plywood sound so clearly in just that register- that must be the plywood...

Thanks everyone again so much for your time! I can see plainly enough that any really low bleed from the back will wrap around and swamp the lows from the front, so I'm abandoning the idea of trying to use the sound from the back of the speaker like you would with an openback guitar cab...

    Walnut as a body?

The walnut instruments I've tried, mostly guitars, are very dark and mellow, not a lot of harmonics. Classy though.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond. I will take another listen, bearing this in mind. But I *do* hear what I hear... it would take a stone wall to block all the bass.

    looking to buy Ampeg V4b!!

This used to be me! But I only had two of each. And I discovered that a V4 (not the V4B) is a good deal cleaner than a V4B or an SVT, and the bass is not rolled off quite as high as either of the others.

My friend has conceived of this orb being made of two "balloons" with expanding hydraulic fluid between the two... I don't *think* he's an alien...:hyper: I'd love to learn more about those internal cabinet dimensions. I can't see how that would work at all frequencies- seems like the...

    Keep it simple???

I keep it as simple as possible- the bass has no knobs, only a pickup and a pickup selector switch. I found the volume and tone controls were making things mushy, especially on the low E string. The preamp has one knob, for gain, and the 440 watt tube monoblock amp has no knobs at all. It...

I love it! But in both these cases there will be low frequencies passing right through the side of the cab and cancelling with the low frequencies coming out of the front of the drivers. Although the lower one looks like it might be cast iron or something... that might help..

    Cabinet phase

The sound from the front of the speakers, which will be arranged in a tall linear arrangement, should emerge in a cylindrical wavefront. If I understand correctly, the sound from the front of the speakers will be 0 degrees our of phase whether you are directly in front or listening from 90...
