Ampeg V4 Club

I picked up mine about a year ago through craigslist for 450$. It had just been gone through and had the mod to put the slightly bigger output tubes in it. I pair it with a peaver 215d-bw and a fender P or rick 4003. I love it. It has such a nice smooth overdrive to it and I've never not had enough volume even with a very heavy hitting drummer. If I was forced to make a choice I would probably let my svt go before this one.

Goldfish, what power tubes do you have in there currently, if you enlarged them?

it adds distortion, but kind of like in addition to the dry signal iirc. since i havent touched that knob since i bought the amp 8years ago i agree when most people seem to think its useless- although i'm mainly a guitar player and never thought to try the distortion knob for bass.

This knob is so curious. Who would mix a clean tone with a distorted one for guitar? The dynamics of playing with the two tones are completely different.

Nonetheless, it is useful for some really odd vibe, especially if the midrange is cranked (you get what, 15 dB of boost!) and the power amp is getting interesting... Then again a lot of weird stuff works for guitar.

These are exceptionally nice spring reverbs.

And how about the "pre amp out" and "power amp in"? A regular effects loop! And actually my preferred way of using the V4 for keyboard sources, vocals, and the like is right into the power amp in. And you can stack a couple preamps if you like, axe in-preamp out into a second amp's preamp! Now that funny little knob is sounding good... on guitar anyway.

6550's. Do a search here on TB and you'll find some info on it. If I knew more about it I'd give you some info myself. I just know it sounds great and is way louder than my other v4bh which is a somewhat differant animal as far as I understand.

Thats what I figured. Mine still has original 7027a's, so I'm not worried about converting yet. It would be interesting to compare an original one and one thats been modded and see what the difference is. And as for the difference between V4's and V4BH's, that's what most people say.

Think you got me twice.

Don't suppose anyone has videos of their V4b's in action?

I think I've posted this before, but here is mine with my old band. Original music. The head DI'd into the FOH with a countryman type 85, was playing the gig with my B40 cab, not sure how much of which sound is being picked up by the camera. Bass is a Gibson G3 (very barky bass), intro/choruses/bridge I'm using overdrive but verses are clean.

Wow, thanks. We're not even into the 30s and I'm messing up with numbers. It's been fixed and updated on the master list. Nice song and playing by the way.

Count me in!

I've got a 71 or 72 (going by the pots) V4 which chrome knobs, no distortion, and no AMPEG logo on the front, but it is a Magnavox.

Picked it up in a little NC pawn shop for $100 a year or two ago.

(Yes all that stupid black tape on there is gone :spit:)
It's much cleaner now.

Still has half of its original tubes, is missing the wooden "H" backplate, and the reverb doesn't work. :D Also, it's been properly grounded... none of this two prong BS on a 100w tuber.:eek:

I kind of liked the blacktape, I'm more amazed that the pawn shop let you steal it from them. And I had thought that I had got a pretty good deal on mine.
