Is there a Yamaha BB club? There is now!

The similarity you’ve spotted between your 1984 BB2000 and the BB3000 actually reflects a design transition Yamaha made in the early ’80s. The earlier BB models (like my '81 BB800 and '82 BB2000 for e.g.) had the more angular “devil horn” cutaways from the original 1977 design, whereas when...

    Hadrien Feraud: Mayones Jabba Fretless

I agree Doc, absolutely superb. It's almost as if he's channeling Jaco from 1976. He isn't of course, he's doing his own thing, but seldom does one hear musical ideas so beautifully expressed, with every nuance, note and phrase so perfectly articulated. Jaco was a master at it, and so...

    Turning a Squier P into a James Jameson P.

There's a cat here in Australia who's an expert at using 'the hook'. His name's Harry Brus. Very soulful, very funky.

Seeking the Joe Osborn sound: foam mute a good or bad idea?

Mine too. His tone is just glorious. Warm and fat - with a point. One of the greatest exponents of the instrument as a true 'bass guitar', both in his sound AND the way he played. A musical hero of mine and will remain so until the day I die.

Seeking the Joe Osborn sound: foam mute a good or bad idea?

Joe played a '60 stack-knob jazz bass. Dead Labella flats, bridge pickup volume all the way down. Tone up. Right hand resting on the neck pickup cover while using a large heavy gauge triangular plectrum. No bridge ashtray. That's the sound. The 'thwack'. Foam might help a bit, as long as it's...

NBD: Squier Classic Vibe 50s Single-Coil

Yes, I love that growl, but it'll still do the thud extremely well - as good if not better than the split coil IMO. Mine still has the flats that were on it when I bought it. I've been doing the palm-muting thing with a stick of foam back near the bridge. Thud city, especially with the tone...

NBD: Squier Classic Vibe 50s Single-Coil

Congratulations, that is a gorgeous bass and to be perfectly honest, it looks as good as my '54 Reissue II P. These SCPBs are a revelation. I purchased mine 6-months ago after having played the split coil for many years (amongst a roster of other basses) and while it does have a few quirks...

I need your opinion: Custom Shop '59 Precision Bass vs American Vintage II 1960 Precision Bass?

I can't speak for the American Vintage II 1960 Precision, but I do have a 2014 CS '59 Journeyman Relic Precision in vintage blonde with the gold anodized guard, and it's just ok, nothing to write home about. I bought it because it was half the price of a new one. I couldn't imagine paying new...

Paging owners of both 2 EQ and 3 EQ StingRays...

Thanks for your very generous replies everyone - I've read them all - a lot of food for thought there. I truly appreciate it. The journey continues...

Ignore previous message - bass is no longer available.

Paging owners of both 2 EQ and 3 EQ StingRays...

I bought a 3‑band StingRay back in 2005. It was my main gigging bass for about five years, but I was never completely in love with the sound. I still own it and never plan to sell it for sentimental reasons, but it doesn’t see much playing time anymore because I have other basses that suit me...

    The joy of root-fifth playing

This is one of my essentials for country bass playing. A real masterclass in feel, restraint, and note length. The bass sits just behind the beat without ever dragging, uses exactly the right number of notes, and lets space and duration do as much work as pitch. The line is warm and beautifully...

    Deal breakers/deal makers

True. Just recently I declined a very nice Yamaha BB1200 because it did not have the OHSC. Oh well...
