NBD: Squier Classic Vibe 50s Single-Coil

Congratulations, that is a gorgeous bass and to be perfectly honest, it looks as good as my '54 Reissue II P.

These SCPBs are a revelation. I purchased mine 6-months ago after having played the split coil for many years (amongst a roster of other basses) and while it does have a few quirks (namely 60-cycle hum from the single coil), I'm so taken with the tone I actually prefer to the split coil. IMO it is a purer, deeper bass tone with more growl in the low end - even with flats. I put a hunk of foam in the bridge on mine and switch out between straight fingerstyle and palm-muting in a small jazz ensemble playing standards, latin and bebop. The tone is perfect. Palm muting gives me a beautiful warm, thumpy tone and if I want to drive things along a bit more, I just ease into fingerstyle and the bass responds beautifully. I love it.
Not to repeat myself, but I was taken aback by the growl. I was expecting a Motown thud machine. I was set on putting some La Bella flats on this but am not going to try some La Bella rounds to lean into the growl.

Congrats on the new bass! This is one of my favorite in-production basses right now. The Squier Classic Vibe line is just so good.

I love how comfy the neck’s been on the ones I’ve played, and the clank it gets with everything wide open is just perfect.

Lovely finish too! I’d probably get the same.
Squier punches above their weight class time and time again. I love the neck and the "aged" coating on the neck has a nice slightly caramel tinge to it.

Yes, I love that growl, but it'll still do the thud extremely well - as good if not better than the split coil IMO.

Mine still has the flats that were on it when I bought it. I've been doing the palm-muting thing with a stick of foam back near the bridge. Thud city, especially with the tone rolled back a bit. :smug:

I can't speak to the Chinese release but I see that it is Alnico 3 (first time I've ever seen that) and more of a baseball bat neck with clear lacquer. Mine is the Indo meade one with Alnico 5, slimmer C neck, and amber tinted lacquer for a vintage look.

I been own CIC CV50P (Blonde ) and Indo CV50P ( 4 blonde + 1 Burst ) before, i can smell it .......
CIC CV50P has Alnico V pickup but i raise both A and D magnet pole piece for string to string tonal balance, meanwhile i upgrade the stock machine head with Gotoh GB640 and swap the stock himass bridge with Fender Vintage bend bridge.

Agree CIC CV50P neck slightly thicker than current Indo CV50P neck profile, but still comfort in hand.

On this bass I use these
I've had these strings on for a few days and I'm giving them an appropriate amount of time to break in before I make a judgement, but I like what I'm hearing/feeling so far. They don't quite have the grit of the factory rounds that came with it but they have a much better feel than those strings.

Glad you like them. Keep them on for a couple months. Don’t know how to explain it, but they get smoother to the touch like a flat wound. Very very soft round, less coarse than daddario nickels.

Yesterday I adjusted the truss rod for the first time since buying (trading, really) and they fell sooooo much better. It needed a full half-turn of tightening which I feel is a lot for an off-the-rack bass, but I also get that Squiers don't get the same love in music stores as USA Fenders.

A half turn isn't super crazy for a squier. A neck takes a couple months to fully settle in. When I got mine, it was the middle of Midwest winter. Midwest winter can be 65 degrees one day, then -10 the next 4 days. Took me a while but now that the bass is acclimated, it stays super still. Doesn't even lose tune hah.

Update to this bass. Since I have acquired this, I made a few mods. I decided to trade up to the Gator Icon bag and use the Transit for my Squier Paranormal Jazzmaster XII guitar.

  • Tuners = Gotoh FB30 Nickel
  • Bridge = Gotoh 203B-4 Nickel plated brass
  • Fender Chrome Bridge Cover
  • Strings = La Bella Super Polished Ian Martin Allison signatures
  • Pickup = Lindy Fralin Split '51 5% overwind (ordered but not installed yet)
  • Case = Gator Icon Bass (vomit green)
  • Tug Bar Thumbrest = Cocobolo (handmade by myself)

I am really REALLY digging this bass a lot. I set the neck relief, string heights, and intonation....so much better!

Fralin Split 51 P pickup actually sound rounder and smoother than single coil 51 pickup , can't imaging how your +5% wound sound ....

Indo CV50P + Fralin Split 51 std wound + LTF4A

Niiiiice!

I immediately checked the Gator website and I'm disappointed that the color is not actually called vomit green. Dealbreaker!
