The G string was very bright and zingy, while the other strings had a nice and woody growl -- after a bit over a week I was so annoyed by the G string that I went back to my Evah Pirazzi weich (maybe a combination of the Zyex with another G string might be interesting but didn't go there).

Do you know String Matrix - Hervé Jeanne ? It might give you some starting point or narrow down your options (please consider supporting him if his effort saves you a few bucks)

My DB seemed to survive some much more catastrophic events -- the neck had to be re-inserted into body, peg box cracked. That crack opened up when I got it out of my car (which I do at least once a week, but that very time I realized it was a bad move of the bass). My luthier repaired the bass...

It's still without AI, but with something like the ToneDexter manufacturers could have gone there already (but didn't AFAIK!). Some (thinking MK) seem to have an impressive sound without it anyway, but I agree -- someone will go there and others will follow. Some sooner, some later.

Not that bright, but if you liked the growly sustain on the borrowed bass, the Zyex lights might be worth considering. (I got some set up issues when moving from Evah medium, though; they seemed too light for my string and fingerboard setup).
