What's the best modification you've made?

for me the best modification I have done is running my pickups directly to the output jack bypassing all the knobs. Bass runs wide open and everything is eq'd later down the road. Learned it from John Myung and have never looked back since.

    drilling a 6th hold in a 5 string neck

We mainly play rock / prog rock. Which is why I was interested in trying this. I have small hands, and I currently have 2 5-strings. 1 is strung B - G, the other E - C. This gets me 90% of the songs we cover/want to cover. I have tried many 6 string basses and can't find one that doesn't...

    drilling a 6th hold in a 5 string neck

after seeing the replies here I am very interested in doing this. I have a cheapo 5 string that has a decent head stock with enough space to pull it off. I'm not worried about the nut, I've made my own replacements for broken stuff in the past. I was wondering how you handled the bridge...

    drilling a 6th hold in a 5 string neck

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this? I've been pondering with converting a 5 string to a 6 string. Mainly to keep the neck width. Just wanted some thoughts before going for it. thanks.

bass is very "scratchy" .. setup issue?

I don't remember having this problem so pronounced before. I haven't really changed anything. But recently, the last few months, while playing I can hear every adjustment and movement I make with my left hand. I can hear everything when I move up and down the neck between positions. Is this a...

How long before your first gig?

Short answer .... 4 days. Long Answer ... My grandfather and his brother were in a band together. His brother died and the band had a show that weekend. The band pulled me aside at the funeral gathering at the house and talked me into playing a show that weekend. We started that day and I...

    Bass Quartet and Alternate Tuning

Hi guys, I am working with a few other bass players on a string quartet type of project but with only bass guitars. Some of the arrangements I am working on require higher parts. For those parts, I am thinking about using some alternate tuning for the higher parts to save the guys from...

If you don't mind used or older models. Yamaha's have fairly Wide necks, as do some of the older Washburn 6 Strings.

Bass Pickups from the 90's - I can't remember the name

Been trying to remember this for awhile now and can't seem to. I remember from ads in Bass Player Magazine from the early to mid 90's. I could have sworn the were John 'Something' Pickups. But I can't remember. I only remember they were like $200 a pickup. I could be way off on the name. I...

6 string bridge for 5 string neck

I was watching an interview with john myung's bass tech. The tech mentioned that the music man bongo's he used were basically 5 string models with a custom 6 string head stock, bridge and nut. This was done to get the strings closer together and so the neck wasn't as much of a "boat oar" as he...
