    I've quit

I’m 63. I played my first gig at 17 and just forgot to quit. I play with one classic rock and soul dance band. All songs I’ve heard and played forever. We rehearse about once a month to learn a “new” song or two and play once or twice a month. I play with three jazz combos that never...

Did you ever attempt to play Upright Bass -- how did it go?

Seven years ago, after playing electric bass for 40 years, I bought an upright. I spent a year practicing and taking lessons from a local pro jazz bassist before gigging with it. I was setting up on stage with a big band when a mother with her teenage son said to him. "Look they have a cello.". The son said "Mom, it's a bass.". The mom walked up to the edge of the stage and addressed me. "Please tell my son that you have a cello. ". I answered, "It's a double bass. "...

I got desperate and posted a CL ad.

I have found good gigs from the dfw CL ads. I answered an add that led to three years that played 80 to 120 gigs a year, opened for many national and regional acts, played festivals, and got some minor airplay. I found my current working dance band through CL as well.. Don't know about...

Do you care if your band is any good?

It absolutely matters to me. All of the bands I play with ( one classic rock and soul dance band, two jazz quartets, plus sub gigs) are good sounding bands with good players. There are too many great players and bands in my area too settle for playing crap.
