PJ Club

It seems that way. There's still not a lot of blending going on, but it seems like I have more options now with the blend pot. I'm sure the fact that it's new has a lot to do with that. But the biggest plus for me is the one volume knob. It's just easier. I'm lazy. I may have the same thing done to my jazz bass.

I am such a sucker for a cool PJ....

Added another to the herd today: 2005 Tony Franklin P (on the right).

Now I have a trio.

Since the new pots and the raising of my j pup, I'm loving the sound of the solo'd jazz with the tone off. That burpy, honky goodness sounds so good.

I don't play with a band much (I'm in a generic cover band but everyone else is a lot busier than me with wives and kids and whatnot)...... so I ask, is there any room for that tone? Can anyone name any specific songs that they've ever used that setting for?

Anything you write with that in mind!

Eh, it gets used all the time in fusion, probably 'cause Jaco. Other than that... probably not too much. It doesn't really have a lot of bass, and it does have a lot mids and highs, so it isn't exactly suited to covering the role bass guitar traditionally covers. If your in a group where bass is supposed to be at the front of the mix, like some funk and fusion, or a group without a guitarist filling in the mids, it might work alright. Other than that, bass solos, I guess.

So in the kinds of bands most people are likely to find themselves in, probably not the most useful. It does sound neat though. A MM bridge p'up with the treble rolled off is a similar sound with a little more guts, and it sound awesome. I use that sound fairly often when I'm playing at church without a guitarist (which is most of the times I'm on bass, since I'm the guitarist).

This is a great thread. I'm a lefty and cut my fingers on a lefty Squier P Bass Special. Over the years, I've tried to find a really great PJ bass for rock and finally was able to order my custom built G&L SB-2. I wanted a classic sounding bass for rock to play through my Ampeg tube amps and I found it in the SB-2's simplicity. The jazz pickup is used more or less as a toe control and the hot pickups sound buttery when dialed in. The body is Alder and is painted Candy Apple Red with a natural maple board, I thought of adding a modern color to a classic bass. Here is the picture posted by G&L from their facebook page after it was built. I couldn't take the delivery waiting period after seeing this pic lol.

My bucket list of basses includes a Spector Euro 4 PJ setup and I will be able to grab one soon in hopes that the rumors of Spector stopping production of lefty basses is false.
