    Ibanez really?

I have owned and played almost exclusively Ibanez SRs for my entire bass playing life so far. I've had an SR505, a fretless SR300, an SRX500, and I currently have an SRF705 Portamento fretless and I'm GASing pretty hard for one of the new SR305s with mahogany body and upgraded pickups. None of...

Claimed "Celebrity" Attachment To a Bass

I almost bought an Aria fretless 5 string formerly owned by John Giblin (Simple Minds, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel and loads others). I had a suspicion it may have been the one he used on the Kate Bush track "Deeper Understanding". I love John's playing and all those artists so I really should have...

    Good mid-price fretless bass?

In terms of features and the feel of it, I'd be quick to label it the best fretless 5er in the mid end of the market. Most other ones I've seen just don't come near. I was also very interested in the GWB35 and a Shecter Stiletto, both of which looked very good too. I still think the Portamento...

    Good mid-price fretless bass?

I'm very pleased with my Ibanez Portamento. £650.

    Budget 5 string options

Basically I need a new 5 string for gigging purposes, that should be good enough to record with ideally (running through a Sansamp to juice up the tone for example). What I'm after is a beater, pretty much. Not junk, but not "great" as my budget right now doesn't allow for it. I've narrowed it...

NBD: my new 5 string Portamento. GASSING after this thing since it first came out. Got this after returning an LTD fretless that had promise but just didn't do it for me in the end. This thing though, this thing is just fine!

BASSIST'S WHO HAS YOUR FAVORITE SOUND?

Some of my favorite tones: Geddy on almost anything, but especially Moving Pictures through Presto Sean Malone on Cynic's Focus and Kindly Bent to Free Us Steve DiGiorgio on Death's Individual Thought Patterns Peter Hook on any New Order release from the 80s David Ellefson on any of the...

Is the SR305 a Good First 5 String

It's a perfectly good first 5-string but you might consider saving a bit longer and getting an SR505. The electronics are far superior. I went from an SR505 to an SR300F (as my first fretless) and I found the electronics somewhat wanting in comparison. There's no reason it shouldn't work just...

    Advice on strings for fretless

I really like the Chromes and I'm also quite happy with Rotosound Jazz 77s. I felt the Fender 9050s started out great but got lifeless a lot quicker. I'm very interested in the new EB Cobalt flats.

Desparately trying to recreate Wal tone club?

I'm not really a fan of the post-80s Rush stuff tbh. Or even of the pre-80s stuff, though I like some of it. Not sure how much I like Roll the Bones either tbh! Permanent Waves through Presto is just such a blindingly good streak of albums. Power Windows is the album that made me a Rush fan. The...

Desparately trying to recreate Wal tone club?

Power Windows through Presto has one of the best bass tones I've ever heard. I can get a sort of pseudo-Ged Wal tone on my SRX500 but a lot of that comes down to imitating his technique as much as possible...i.e just really whack away at it. The bass does have 2 humbuckers like a Wal (correct?)...

NBD: Ibanez bass body smacked in transit.

What the hell is going on with that box??? It looks like several smaller boxes chained together with tape or something. Shocking. Those lower end Ibbys have such atrocious resale value (unfortunately because despite being good basses they are highly ubiquitous) that in that condition you'd be...

    ESP LTD B-205 (SM)

Thanks for the diagram! Hmmm, as for the finish, it may be the picture. I can't see anything glaringly wrong with it up close. You know, you make some good points with your last paragraph. Perhaps I rushed into this purchase. The store is only a half hour train ride away from me, so returning...

    ESP LTD B-205 (SM)

Here we go hehe. I had to order it in as it was in their warehouse, then go pick it up. The spalting effect is perhaps not as dramatic as I had hoped, but the overall wood grain is nice enough for me not to care too much. I like that subtle flame effect too. Its a nice looking piece of kit...

    New EB Cobalt Flats?

I am really, really interested in these but they have yet to appear in the UK it seems.
  24. M

    ESP LTD B-205 (SM)

No problem answering that. I'm in the UK and paid around £450 from a place called Andertons. Most big music stores have this model available here, it's prob the most common fretless 5 I've seen in the UK. Correct, I've been wanting one of these for a few years! Then I saw the Ibby SRF705 and...

    ESP LTD B-205 (SM)

Well I now own this fretless 5er and I'm overall quite pleased with it. There's a dead spot on the G string between frets 5-7 I wasn't expecting but it doesn't cause much trouble. I've got Rotosound Jazz Flats on it. I'm not the biggest fan of the pre-amp to be honest. May replace it with a...

    Official ESP club

Here's my new LTD B-205SMFL. First 5 string fretless and my first LTD! I've been sort-of forcing myself to lay off til I get some RS 77 flats on there but from what I can tell so far it's very good. Spalting effect isn't as crazy as I hoped but that's only a minor point, and the subtle...

    Schecter Stiletto Extreme 4 Review

I've become quite enamored with the body shape of this thing recently. Personally I prefer the look of the NT Studio version. That cherry burst and gold hardware is gorgeous though, reminds me of a Spector.

    Ibanez Portamento SRF700 VS. SR370F

The SRF700 is clearly going to leaps ahead in every way. I've been drooling over that thing since I first saw a picture of it. However my first fretless was an SR300F, exactly the same as the SR370F without the sunburst finish. Very nice bass for the money, an ideal first fretless in fact. The...

    ESP LTD B-205 (SM)

BUMP I've got a couple questions that hopefully owners of this bass (fretless version) can answer for me. * Is the scale 34 or 35? I've seen conflicting statements online. * Is it true that regular long scale bass strings won't fit a string-through body? Can you not just trim them a bit less...

Is Squire a bad thing ?

The VM and Cv series are quite decent actually. Sure its not a USA made Fender but the difference between that and the Mexican ones isn't enough to justify paying almost twice the money for a Mexican. Even the USA made Fenders aren't worth £1000 in my eyes even if they are fantastic.

    Ibanez Love?

I've been playing Soundgears most of the time I've been playing bass. They're probably my favourite. I have smaller hands so the neck and string spacing works perfectly for me, I absolutely love the body shape, and they always give a workable tone. I don't have to think twice about them.

    Disappointing ebay bass delivery

It's a shame but the finish on these basses is just so flimsy. I don't understand it myself. Mahogany isn't meant to be that soft, surely? Its a fantastic bass, all said, but I used to ding mine all the time dropping jack leads on it by mistake and so on. However the person you bought it from...

    squire v cort

I'd say the Cort. It's more tonally versatile, slimmer necked and with more comfortable body contours. But that's just me. The P bass is a classic design and classic tone. I've never played the Cort but it's basically their version of a GSR. is it passive?

Is It Bad To Be A "Cheapo" When Buying Bass Guitars?

I too usually spend no more than £500 on basses, new that is. You can get such a perfectly good instrument in that price range that it suits me just fine. That doesn't mean I don't sit there and drool over higher-end basses (my dream bass to end all dream basses is a Pedulla Pentabuzz which cost...

    Schecter Stiletto Stealth bass

What's the word on these? They seem to be brand new. I've never been very interested in Schecters but I admit I've become quite enamoured with the Stiletto body shape. What's really interesting about this one, aside from the sweet matte finish, is the mono-rail style bridge. That's a feature you...
