Who is this bassist? (Jethro Tull)

That's Jeffrey Hammond Hammond on Aqualung...I dig him, but Glenn is a beast!!! Anyone heard their new bassist, Dave Goodier? He seems quite a good player....

    Alphonso Johnson

Alphonso Johnson is one of my biggest influences, and one of the tastier and groovier players around...his solo on George Duke's "floop the loop" is still outstanding after 35 years!!! An album featuring Alphonso that I particulary like is "Passages" by Frank Gambale, not flashy/chopsy lines...

The #1 song on your birthday

Yeah, I added that "81" 'cause the world is ful of "Nickbass"... :D so we're the same age!! I like "Sailing", but if I had to pick one single Cross tune I'd still go for "Ride Like The Wind"... :)

    Most Transparent Bassist albums

Yeah, grab "Mariella.." it's a great album with amazing musicianship but not "wanking"...plus it has the best version of "Fall" I've heard until now (except the original of course)..

    Most Transparent Bassist albums

+100 on Bona's records. Another one that comes to mind is "Resonator" by Tony Levin, the bass is prominent but serves well the songs without too much flashes (except for a couple of songs) and plus it's a vocal albums. In the jazz/fusion field I'd say "Mariella's Dream" by Oscar Stagnaro, there...

Hadrien Faraud No Longer With MacLaughlin

We should always listen to our drummer friends! That said, H. Feraud is a MONSTER player without any doubt, but probably E. Mbappe is a better rounded player, and this comes from experience...also Etienne has great skills, but he displays it only when needed ! (I saw him years ago with the...

    5 strings + fingerstyle bassplayers

I know, but I needed to put them anyway... or better, I didn't understood that I had to put "only fingerstyle" players... :D they slap but they have also a very distinctive fingerstyle..also Stubenhaus and Porcaro slapped alot during the eighties, but it seems to be just fingerstyle nowadays...

    5 strings + fingerstyle bassplayers

Mike Porcaro Tom Kennedy Neil Stubenhaus Alphonso Johnson Tony Levin (Ok, he's using pretty everything to hit the strings of his bass...but he can considered a fingerstyle player!) Will Lee (when he plays a 5 strings) Even if alredy named, I must say Nathan East and Jimmy Johnson, two...

    YOU on youtube.... Yes, please.

This is a little "promotional" video I did for my school, it's amodal solo over a sort of "soft/porno/jazzy" background....:p thanks for your time!

Question for players in blues bands...

I play in a blues band, from traditional blues classics (Muddy Waters, BB King) to rock blues (Hendrix, Vaughan) and jazzy/funky blues (our original tunes, Robben Ford, Joey De Francesco, a couple of jazz/blues standards)....I'll take solos sometimes, quite simple if I'm playing blues classics...

Who else is a Pop bassist?!

Well. pop music is such a large amount of artists and such a subjective definition that I bet everyone of us has played with pop acts!!! I played with a lot of local pop singers (if by "pop music" you mean very easy listening music, but not necessarily silly or too simple), and when I go to...

Richard Bona - The Ten Shades Of Blues

    Where do we bassists work?

My main work is teaching bass and harmony in two music school (one is an Italian center for the LA Music Academy) and playing bass in local studios and clubs...other than that I work part-time in an office, but in the past I've done all sort of sh###y jobs!!

Which Metal bassist(s) has the best sound?

My favorite above all is Thomas Miller's sound on "The divine wings of tragedy" and "Twilight in Olympus" by Symphony X, great tone and really underrated player... Sean Malone's tone on "Focus" made me want to buy a fretless before listening to Jaco, Willis etc...I love also Steve DiGiorgio's...

    Leland Sklar: any recommendations?

...and the main thing it's that he doesn't just play Mike's lines, but he adds his own personalty to the music he's playing while,at the same time, he fits for the song...that's really the style of a great musician..

Can Anyone Identify Pino's mystery fretless 5?

I saw him a couple of months ago with Simon Phillips and Philippe Saisse, great show!! Pino had three basses: a fender mustang (fretted), his glorius stingray fretless 4 strings and the bass of the photo, but he used that only on a song or two if I'm correct...anyway the playing was breathtaking!!

Teachers: Recommend tracks demonstrating FEEL, TONE, RANGE, PRECISION, not Flash...

Any tune by the Police...Sting plays great basslines with a lot of pauses and sometimes odd meters...any tune by Toto: Mike Porcaro is simply a master in laying it down with amazing taste and groove(he and also David Hungate before him)...any old Motown hit (with Jamerson, Duck Dunn or Willie...

    jimmy johnson

To put it simple: he's a monster. He has great tone, great adaptability to any kind of music but still he has his personality, not to talk about his musicality or his chops..I read somewhere that he doesn't like that much to solo...to me he's one of the best bass soloists ever!

    Leland Sklar: any recommendations?

Toto's "falling in between live" double album and dvd gives a good exemple of Mr Sklar's qualities...it's funny to see how Lee plays the lines and the tunes originally played by another great bassist, Mike Porcaro... Another great ones are "Rush Street" by Richard Marx (Sklar plays on one tune...

    Abraham Laboriel

There aren't enough words to express my complete and total admiration to Abe Laboriel, any time I see a topic about him I'll jump on it instantly!! latin bassist

I have the book and it's one of my favorite learning tools...Oscar is a great player and also a really focused teacher! How about Lincoln Goines? Plays on pratically all Dave Valentin's albums, and also with Paquito Rivera, Tito Puente etc...amazing musician imho. I dig Seis Del Solar 2...

    Jonas Hellborg

Great musician without any doubt, plus he's got an approach surely unconventional to our beloved instrument...that said, I don't dig that much his solo production, except a couple of albums ("E" and "Icon")...loved him on Mike Shrieve's "Deep Umbra"...

    Baron Browne

Great player with an awesome tone...i dig his playing especially on Kevin Eubank's "Sundance", but also on Billy Cobham's "Warning" and "Powerplay" (those, IMO, were not amongst Cobham's best albums, but Baron's playing alone is worth listening)..

    Gary King

I've discovered recently a player who's around since at least the seventies: Gary King. Jazz/fusion fretless players???

One who does monster things with both fretless and fretted axes is Jimmy Johnson, he played from everyone from James Taylor to Planet X, from Allan Holdsworth to Lee ritenour... Fernando Saunders plays some good and tasty fretless lines (even if it seems that most of you guys don't like smooth...

    Neil Jason

Neil Jason is an amazing player, I've listened to "heavy metal be-bop" a million of times and his playing still blows me away...another great album with him is "Passionfruit" by Michael Franks, where he shares bass credits with Will Lee....
