Paul Jackson

I can see why Chuck Rainey said Paul Jackson was the baddes bass player back in the 1990's interview he did with Will Lee. Paul Jackson is a as big a fan of double stops as Chuck Rainey for sure. I'm guessing that Chuck Rainey influenced Jackson.

paul jackson was (and is) a huge influence on my playing!

headhunters, thrust, flood (man i LOVE that album!) huge favourites in my collection.. those albums are like encyclopedia's of grooves! insane playing on every paul jackson track i've heard.. the man has got the groove! That live Flood album is great - it's awesome to hear the tunes live. the way they developed the grooves thoughout each tune is just unbelievable... as well as the different interpretations of the tunes (spank-a-lee!)

on a side note though.. i watched that bassplayertv thing the other moth, and i got to say that i was really turned off by the way he talked and his attitude in general. Which is unfortunate, because i have so much respect for his playing.. and it's kind of dissapointing to not really feel the same way for him as a person.. i prefer my bass superstars to be a little more humble :P

can't take away from the mans groove though!

I listened to all 3 for the first time, this morning

Sextant
Thrust
Headhunters

Im 45, you would have thought I would have heard those by now.

Those are all great albums to be sure. Just note that Buster Williams is the bassist on Sextant. How about the other two albums by the Mwandishi group, Crossings and their self-titled first release - have you heard those? They are worth checking out too - Buster is a great player!

I just ordered Paul Jackson's solo album "Funk On a Stick". I hear good things about it, anyone have it?
Re: Mwandishi, Christian McBride pays/plays tribute to that group on his "Live At Tonic", cool stuff!

That's funny, he seemed cool to me. He just has a potty mouth and a fondness for raunchy humor(which actually is alright with me.)

Just wanted to throw some love to the bass playing/overall groove on "Slow Traffic to the Right", a fantastic album IMO by Bennie Maupin, Headhunters w/Patrice Rushen instead of Herbie.

You can check it out on youtube, it's a hard album to find, but I know there are some people who have blogs that are keeping the rare funk alive.
