Paul Jackson

Oh yeah...Thrust is incredible. It is definitely one of my desert island albums. If you can find it, Flood is the live equivalent...but I think it is only an import. Paul Jackson also plays on the Herbie albums Man-Child and Secrets. Definitely check those out.

Jackson also played on the seminal 'Headhunters'--as in the first recording of that whole project, featuring 'Chameleon'. It woke a lot of us up back in '73--74! The drummer was Harvey Mason, another monster, and the grooves were a little different, but just as interesting as the Jackson/Mike Clark team.

All required listening for would-be funksters.

I would love to have that Jackson/Clarke video.
Anyone got Jackson's solo album, Black Octopus.

YUP! Thats a funktastic album, stripped down and pretty raw sounding, and Paul Jacksons playing is on point as always.

His other album, funk on a stick is pretty slick too.

yeah, paul jackson is a huge inspiration for me too, first headhunters, then thrust! man, that album is great. i also have a manchild, (some of that is louis johnson, secrets, flood, black octopus and the headhunters album without herbie, survival of the fittest. that album is a bit mixed but the track god made me funky is paul jackson, mike clarke, wah wah watson and bennie maupin at its best. bennie maupin has to be one of the most underated sax players, really soulful, really bluesy but can really stretch out too. oh and return of the headhunters is cool, jackson has a more 'active soapbar' tone than the old P tone he used.

I think Flood is even more intense than Headhunters and Thrust.
