no more frets = no more high end???

I would try roundwounds. I had the same problem you did. The original 'board on the fretless was very chewed. But someone on here clued me in. I was still playing the fretless like a fretted instrument. My vibrato technique needed to change. Wiggle your finger back and forth along the length of...

no more frets = no more high end???

    1) I assume by finishing, you are thinking that a harder surface, like epoxy, may provide more highend. I switched necks on my fretless Jazz several years ago from stock rosewood Fender to a warmoth wenge neck with ebony on the fingerboard. Gained a bit of brightness but nothing you would notice...

Fender MIM pickups -or- Squier Duncan Designed?

I own a fretless MIM Jazz that I swapped the stock pups out of a long time ago. IIRC, they had a pretty basic J tone but nothing inspiring, hence they were changed to EMG's. I bought the VM Jazz a couple years ago. I love the tone out of this bass. I would do the swap if I were you. The Duncan's...

NO. I do all the time.

    Yup, another "Which Strings" post

DR's are nice, but they are a bit naturally scooped. D'Addario's are pretty even. Roto 66's have a mid "bark" that can't be beat. I Love LaBella flats, but Roto's are my fave rounds. Geddy's fave too, BTW.

LaBella Deeptalkin' 760M's - now what!

If you can't tighten the truss rod nut, try to loosen it and back it all the way out. Use a small wooden skewer ( or toothpick, or whatever) and dab some vaseline into the inside of the nut. Do not get it on the outside. Then tighten the truss to your needs. I have these strings on my...

    What flatwounds do you recommend??

+100 I love these strings. Definitely more tension than Chromes, but this is a good thing. Pluck them softly and they sound quieter but responsive. Dig in and they will happily hold up, and growl beautifully. Very responsive to your right hand technique.

What do you look for in a compressor?

Spencer, I mentioned this in a thread about tube amps last night, but I will repeat it here. I love the natural, transient, compression of tubes. My small rig is SS and would love a pedal to give me the RESPONSE, not the tone, of a toober.

La Bella Deep Talkin' BASS stainless steel flatwound 760FM

Beautiful Bass and great strings. I'm playing the 760m Jamerson set right now, after having the 760fm set. Love both, really the Jamerson's just have more tension. If you you can believe it is possible over the 760FM set ! Enjoy!!

A drummer who is actually a musician. It's kinda nice.

The very gifted drummer of my old metal band was also a pretty good guitarist. Even subbed in a friend's band for a few gigs. Sadly, he sucked at all other facets of human existence.

Will new flatwounds sound like my old rounds?

Chromes and TI's are lower in tension than Roto's. LaBella's are brutal for tension, stay away unless you like high tension. New Chromes are surprisingly bright, and sound nowhere near dead 66's. They will mellow in a few months, and stay that way for a while.

Tube Amps - Now I get it....

IIRC, you posted a thread earlier about what people wanted out of a compressor. That is what I want out of a compressor, but only when using my SS head. When using my tube head it is not needed.

Tube Amps - Now I get it....

FWIW, I've owned an SVT CL for several years. Recently I picked up a GK Backline for smaller, quieter gigs. The first thing I noticed was the GK had an Immediacy that my SVT didn't have. Now, we are talking milliseconds. And in a band mix I do not notice a difference at all. Alas, my SVT...

    More directed toward teens: Parents

My dad used to give me a little grief about modding, heck even adjusting things when I first started. But as I got into my late teens he trusted I knew what I was doing by then. I did talk about playing music constantly, I even demonstrated many things to him. As I said, took a while but I had...

Speaker problems using GK Backline 600

It is not the ohms rating of the speaker either. Backline 600's can be run at 4 or 8 ohms. Neither is "better".

No. SS amps sound lousy whether they are warm or cold. :hiding:

    What Impedance is car audio?

I will agree with that. Likewise, amplifiers require a minimum of resistance. Ohm is a measure of electrical resistance. Resistors are measured in Ohms. Reading in between the lines, I think the OP just wants to know what Ohms rating of said speakers should be to safely operate his amp.

    What Impedance is car audio?

All amplifiers ( and other electrical devices) have an electrical impedance, both input and output. The important part is to not go lower than the Minimum Impedance. This is the same for car, home, bass, guitar, or PA amplifiers. Of course car amps are usually used in cars. And I use a bass...

    Thinking about trying some Flatwounds?

I agree to this alot, but consider a few things. When you tried them, were you in a band situation? Were you trying a bass/amp combo similar to what you own? And, most importantly, what style and sound are you playing? Things sound different depending on the context...

    What Impedance is car audio?

Same rule rule as bass amps. Doubling or cutting your wattage in half won't change the volume that much. More speakers area will will make a bigger difference. Just go with 4 ohms per side. Trust, you'll be fine.
  27. randall p

    What Impedance is car audio?

I would stick to 4 ohms per channel. Most full range car speakers run at this rating.

    Glue used late 90's fenders

Thank you, I saw that this morning. Then I tried it. The glue did not loosen at all, just chipped the end of the FB. Thinking I may need some kind of solvent.

    Glue used late 90's fenders

Does anyone know what kind of glue fender used in the late 90's to attach their fretboards to the neck. I have a fretless MIM made in 97 that I'm trying to pull the rosewood fretboard off.

Is it possible to make a Jazz bass rock?!

I played metal for years with a fretless MIM Jazz. My tone was fine through a loud Hartke half stack. But in the studio I couldn't get the same grit because the studio jerk wouldn't let me mic up the amp. So, everyone said "get EMG's". Next time in studio, small improvement. What I didn't...

    No Gig Money

From age 14 - 22 I played in a couple metal bands. Never made more than a few pennies or just got paid in alcohol. The last couple years I even owned the band truck, so gas put me in the negative. Last year (I'm 31 now) I joined a country rock cover/originals band. The last 4 months of gigs have...

If you liked "X" then you might like "Y"

Btw, IIRC, Geddy has been pretty faithful to Roto's. Not that you will instantly sound like him, but it is a starting point to base the sound of Roto's.
  38. randall p

If you liked "X" then you might like "Y"

I always liked the Roto 66's. Tried several strings over the years (DR's, D'adds, EB's, Dunlop, etc) but always went back to the Roto's for RW strings. Plenty of low end, but I always felt they had the most "midrange bark" than other strings. DR's felt scooped to me, great for slap, but I can't...
