Is Playing the Drums Good for Playing the Bass?

Learn another instrument because you want to learn it, not because it will help you learn your primary instrument. Learning your primary instrument will help you learn your primary instrument. However, having learned guitar first because I wanted to learn guitar, then picking up bass because...

    Bass: Rhythm or solo instrument?

One might also ask if drums are a rhythm or solo instrument. they can do both. So can a guitar. So can a keyboard. And what about when there is no drummer in a band? Who does the bass keep rhythm with and for? C'mon, you can't pigeonhole what an instrument's or player's part is.

    Bass: Rhythm or solo instrument?

Not all songs have an intro with a bass line. And not all drummers tap out the timing to start.

Bass note not in guitar chord

    Yes, it's fine. It's a nonchord tone.

Does anyone here ever use a capo?

I'm only a bedroom player who plays along with iTunes and cds. A number of the songs are capoed as originally played. I tried playing without a capo, transposing on the bass, but it confused the heck out of me; rather, I'd wind up playing as if the guitar(s) were uncapoed. This is what I said...

Recommend guitar lessons before taking up bass?

I learned guitar first, then I learned bass. I did that because I wanted to play guitar (and still do, primarily). Wanting to learn bass came later. Learning guitar for the fretboard, chord structure and general theory helped me pick up bass quicker. Knowing the layout of a keyboard from...

    Learning Bass after playing guitar?

Same here, except I've never tried a pick on bass. I just have no interest in doing that. In fact I'm trying to move away from using a pick on guitar. I picked up guitar a little over 3 years ago, and bass about 1 1/2 years ago. Playing guitar and learning the fretboard and chord structure...

Tabs=Bad. & No, This 'Isn't' in the Wrong Category

Or if the band is more than a drummer, bass player, guitarist and possibly keyboard player. I can't imagine a large band or orchestra whose members eschew reading music.

Tabs=Bad. & No, This 'Isn't' in the Wrong Category

Just my opinion and experience, but even published sheet music in standard notation can be "wrong" relative to the original recording, for a variety of reasons. Tabs are the person's interpretation of the song. I see snarky comments on UG tabs about "tab sucks, dude"; "wrong key moron" and...

    No drummer to synch with

That's a novel idea. When I play bass along with the recording of Night Moves, for example, I follow the acoustic guitar, and it works pretty well. So I thought I was on the right track.

    No drummer to synch with

Yeah, that goes without saying, or else you have chaos and cacophony. OK, as I thought. Thanks guys. :)

    No drummer to synch with

I'm sure I'm answering my own question, just want confirmation (or contradiction). I've read that the bass player and drummer lock in and synch with each other. But if there is no drummer, just the bass player and one or two guitars... rhythm and lead... do the bass player and rhythm...

A way to slow down MP3s without altering the pitch?

Quicktime. Under File -> Open put the location of the MP3. If it's an iTunes, click on Get Info and copy the location to put into the Open of Quicktime. Then in Quicktime Ctrl K to access the speed controls. I use this because I learn and play 90% with iTunes on my computer. Works great.

Being in a different tuning then guitarist?

OK, let me figure this out... The guitarist is whole step down in DGCFAD, I'm in standard and don't want to tune down. He plays Emaj shape 022100, which is actually Dmaj in DGCFAD, so I play the notes of the Dmaj triad D F# A (if I play R 3 5). Right?

    Chord confusions!

    Muting problem?

Almost all stringed instruments have what is called "sympathetic" vibrations. Sitars are made deliberately with extra drone and sympathetic strings so they vibrate when the playing strings are plucked. Guitars do it and basses do it. I don't have a solution other than what everyone else is...

    What is your skill level?

I'm between Bedroom Warrior/Tab only and Can learn almost any piece if given time. I'm not limited to tab though. I can read the bass line of standard notation. In fact I can read most standard notation, as long as it's not something like a symphonic score. But I do only play in the...

    Chord confusions!

Tru dat. An Fmaj does not have to be the dreaded full barre chord. Any triad anywhere of F A C is an Fmaj. I call inversions "leap frog", because the bass note leaps over the others. Hey, that's me. :eyebrow: R 1 2 C G E E C G G E C Root, 1st inversion, 2nd inversion. There is...

    Chord confusions!

Not a site, but an explanation that was given to me. Here it goes... Understanding why the 5th is implied can be implied can be quite tricky, so I'm glad you asked. It actually goes back to the overtone series (which ties in with physics). Basically, when you play a note, the wave produced...

    Chord confusions!

This is a quote from someone at another site: "This maybe a bit difficult to believe, but when you have Root, 3rd, and 7th tones added together it implies the 5th tone. " He goes on to explain the theory in depth, but I'll leave it at this unless anyone wants the full quote.

Transcribing note symbols to actual letters

I have sheet music (originally for piano) that has no chord notations. Reading the notes on the staff and penciling them in gives me the triads to make the chord. I can use that for guitar or to make a bass line. Apropos nothing, GBDFA is a G7add9 and ACEG is an Am7. Just sayin'. :D

Playing along with records and general tips

Nope, not deliberately. Sometimes finding your way through a song does make you play it almost note for note. Some (most) bass lines at least for the music I play pretty much follow the chord changes. Chord sheets and standard sheet music because I play guitar primarily. Once you know the...

    Looking for, finding, using tabs

Absolutely... always play to the audience. Though as a former music teacher said, where he plays it's a bunch of drunks who really don't care. :D No doubt. You can wind up with "Theseus's Ship"... you rebuild and replace it so much it's not the same thing anymore. And it turns out, as I...

    Looking for, finding, using tabs

I thought so. I don't want this taken wrong by anyone and I'm not trying to be full of myself, but something I see all over is that people want to play exactly like the original recording. So I wondered if that was the case. Good, I like doing that with guitar playing also. I don't want...

    Looking for, finding, using tabs

I see posts asking for tabs for this or that song, and I'm wondering... Are the tabs being asked for the exact tabs (or as close as possible) to the original recording, or are they tabs/chord sheets for the whole song to make up a bass line? I ask because I have made up my own bass lines...

Looking for input from older beginners (and others, too)

I'm 53 and picked up guitar seriously 3 years ago. I took lessons twice for about 6-8 months each over the past 3 years. The rest of the time I've been learning on my own, including learning bass. A year ago last Christmas I got a bass because I wanted to learn. I'm a...

Does anyone here ever use a capo?

I was told by a few people to just start the bass line up the neck the number of frets offset by the capo on the guitar. I've used it for a couple of songs that capo the guitar, and it seems to sound right. But it could either be a fluke or correct, I dunno. :hmm:

    Learning Keyboard??

I started learning guitar first (I'm still learning), then picked up bass (I'm still learning). Bass, imo, is easier to learn after learning guitar. It is for me, anyway. It's learning the notes in the chords. If someone learning guitar only knows the shape of Cmaj (or any chord) and not its...

*** Playing when the music is in the Treble Clef ***

^ This. Great chart... 'tis a keeper. :) The treble and bass clefs are offset by two lines and spaces. A note written on the treble clef is written two lines or two spaces lower on the bass clef, and vice versa: a note written on the bass clef is written two lines or two spaces higher on...

    Question about teachers and tabs

Don't be so harsh on tab... it dates from before the Baroque period and was an accepted and much used form of musical notation for lute-type instruments, the family to which guitar and (electric) bass belong. It's not newIs standard notation better? For the most part yes, but tab is not the...

Could starting to play guitar make you a better bass player?

^ This. I learned (am still learning) to play guitar first, learning chord triads and constructions, inversions, key transpositions and now reading standard notation. I got my bass last Christmas. In a word, learning guitar has made it a lot easier to pick up the bass and start...
