What bassist inspired you to play bass?

Brian Ritchie of the Violent Femmes singlehandedly got me into playing bass.

    Missing Output for GK 1001RB?

I'm also curious on why the amp head only has one output, yet has the hole for the other... is there any explanation for why someone would either: A) remove an output? or B) Release a GK product with only one output?

    Missing Output for GK 1001RB?

Hey guys, Although I've had it for a few months I've finally decided to stop being lazy and inquiring about my GK 1001RB-II head. I picked it up via a seller on Craigslist, and managed to buy the GK 1001RB-II head and a 410RBH for $700 total, which was a fantastic deal in itself. The cabinet...

Dumb Craig's List Ads pt 3, now with brighter whiter dumb!

Well, in his defense the stage would be WAY too crowded with a bassist AND a drummer. I commend these guys for taking a stand on this dilemma.

Girl fronted bands/songs that are well known?

I can't believe no one has brought up the Distillers. Awesome punk band. How about Magik Markers? The song "Taste" is one of my favorites. Marnie Stern is a fantastic electric guitarist/singer and her songs are pretty crazy, but I'm not sure how well she can really be covered.

    Gallien-Krueger owner needs reliability? Catch-22?

I refuse to believe that Behringer is that low. But, as for Orange/Markbass/Ashdown: They don't make uber cheap, low-end equipment. They're fantastic companies, sure, but they don't bother with entry-level equipment. GK is probably Ampeg's closest competitor along with Peavey, and has to match...

    Gallien-Krueger owner needs reliability? Catch-22?

My 1001RB-II has been golden, and I love my 410RBH. In fact, I'm desperately wanting another one to replace my Eden 4x10. I think that your concerns with reliability stem from the fact that the Goldline/Backline stuff isn't made in the main GK factory or in America, where the 1001RB/700RB is...

    Your Dream Festival

One of the best live bands I've ever seen. Amazing bassist through a huge Markbass rig. Thievery Corporation + LCD Soundsystem + Pavement + Trombone Shorty at last year's Virgin Festival made it my favorite show.

2 man bands without a bassist or keys

Actually, Jack White achieved the sound in Seven Nation Army using a standard tuned semi-hollow electric guitar, using a DigiTech Whammy pedal down an octave. Similar setup is used in a lot of Stripes songs, like "Hardest Button to Button". And, to answer your original question...

    Bands who got better

Beach Boys, definitely. The Cure, definitely. Yes, definitely (Fragile ftw). Blur, in my opinion: Parklife was pretty great, but 13 is one of my alltime favorite albums. Think Tank is great too, but it almost doesn't sound like Blur anymore. The Flaming Lips: While I don't feel they made...

Flea's bass and equipment on The RHCP?

I'm pretty sure he was joking, mocking the question which I also find ridiculous. The point is that there are no tonal differences with a wireless receiver (or as much of a difference as there are with different cords), unless one was to (for whatever reason) create a wireless receiver that...

    1. Jack Bruce (Cream) 2. John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin, Them Crooked Vultures) 3. Colin Greenwood (Radiohead) 4. Alex James (blur) 5. Chris Squire (Yes) I think Alex is extremely underrated among bassists.

best compressor pedal for sustain and fatness

My SMX definitely defines my sound. I turn the treble control on my SUB all the way down and boost the bass, makes a very fat and vintage-y sound in my opinion. But, you're right, the only way I got my Trace Comp was because one of my old friends offered it to me. I've seen them go upwards...

best compressor pedal for sustain and fatness

I'm a bit surprised that I'm the first person to mention the Trace Elliot SMX Dual-Band Compression pedal. I use mine religiously, and picked it up used for about $20. It's my 'always on' pedal, and I use the EQ shaping to make my sound extremely bass-driven. You can even tweak the settings to...

    Your Gig Rig

MusicMan SUB4 -> GK 1001RBII -> GK 410RBH -> Eden 410T I absolutely love this set up. Actually just added the Eden to the family yesterday. Got a fantastic deal on it, too. Just traded my old MB115 for it :P Pro's: Full range cabinet up top, bi-amped GK cabinet, amazing tonal diversity...

    Stingray sound on a budget

Honestly, I'm shocked it took this long for anyone to mention the Musicman SUB. It's easily the closest to Stingray tone I've seen, and I got mine for $400. It's my main bass because I actually prefer the tone/feel to actual Ray's. When I get that Sterling, though... *dreams*

Your main amp : Your backup amp

My main is a GK 1001RBII through two GK RBH410's. My backup currently is a GK MB210 combo through an MBE212 extension cabinet. However, I'd really like to settle that down for a practice rig, and pick up another back up amp. I kind of want to try out a Marshall MB450 head, or an older SWR...

    Gk tone.

I've always disliked the Neo's tone, honestly. I play through a GK1001RB, and two GK 410RBHs. Sure, they're heavy as hell, but they have MUCH more solid tone. I have never heard any "tinniness" out of them.

Death From Above 1979... JFK's new rig?

I'd help, but I personally hate Ampeg stuff. I know, I'm a weird minority... That being said, if you /really/ don't want it, I can hold on to it for you.

Death From Above 1979... JFK's new rig?

I've just never heard of a custom 8x8/mix before... unless he has it custom made? I always thought JFK preferred to use vintage equipment. Also, yeah. Baltimore reppin'.

Death From Above 1979... JFK's new rig?

This teaser video was posted by the band... and in it, JFK's new live rig was shown: Invalid Link Removed At about 0:20 you see the stack. Looks like two old Ampeg 8x8's, but what kind of head is that? Looks to me like one of the old heavy Peaveys, but then again I'm awful at recognizing...

    Bass Demo for Audition

Hello TalkBass, I am currently looking for another band, so I'm hitting up craigslist and other similar websites. My question for you is whether or not the quality of my recordings is good enough: They were recorded live with my old band and I really think that my style is reflected...

    Ever "Saved the Day"?

Two stories kind of remind me of this: The first one isn't really like a "BASS PLAYER IN THE HOUSE?" type thing, but during one of my old band's shows my guitarist's guitar head blows. Apparently he had screwed with it the night before and it crapped out on him... and completely cut him off...

    Live Samples: Yay or Neigh?

It's literally a recording of my band playing an outdoor show. We recorded the PA out -> the audio box, and in my opinion sounds pretty good. I need to clean it up a bit with some kind of program (EQ, boosting bass, and cleaning up some buzzing), and I was going to do this anyways. I was just...

    Higher end Gk tone?

My experiences with the 1001RB have been fantastic... but actually, I would urge you to get the 700RB MkII instead. They're both great amps, but the 700RB's lower wattage is easier to push and get the harsh tone I think you're describing. Something that helps a ton with my dirty tone is my...

    Live Samples: Yay or Neigh?

Hey guys, quick question: So, I don't have any recording equipment. What I had used previously was the guitarist of my old band's home studio, and our band had used the Audiobox live to record through our PA mics. My question is, is it wrong of me to use live samples of my bass playing...

    DFA1979 is reforming!!!

I couldn't get into it, but maybe that's the hipster indie kid in me telling me to hate hype. I love old school hip hop and the only newer stuff I touch are acts like Atmosphere or the Roots.
