Tips to avoid becoming an "I used to play bass" dad

There are a lot of folks who start their TalkBass tenure with "Hey uh I used to play, then I had a family, now the kids are grown up and what the hay I thought I'd give this another shot." I'm on my way to writing one of those posts in twenty years. Working overtime in retail, finally got a...

    BB435 vs. BB735a

Sounds like the 735A offers solutions you don't care about. For me, 735 was the obvious choice, so I got one and I love it. Great bass that I highly recommend and I'd be less happy with the 435. But it sounds like the obvious choice for you is the 435, so hey, save money and get the right bass...

    Sire Bass Club!

Was that recent? I'm about to order a pickguard from them (just got my V5 yesterday!) but they haven't responded to a message from me, and their website and facebook pages have been silent for about a year, so I'm sort of nervous they may have shut down.

What is the most appropriately rated bass in your opinion?

For the sake of what I think could actually be a fun discussion, I'll put in Yamaha as a brand. General consensus is that any instrument from them will work well, be reliable, weigh a little extra, and not be particularly sexy. I've found that to be accurate.

How do you search for info on playing jazz on a bass, without just getting Jazz bass results?

... I feel some indignation that this worked for you. But also gratitude.

How do you search for info on playing jazz on a bass, without just getting Jazz bass results?

There's my trouble, I like certain jazz a lot, but I know I'm not into it enough to get deep and learn all the things. I'm not sure there's even such a thing as basic jazz for people who just kinda want to play it once in a while, but one always hopes. So once in a while, I search for basic...

How do you search for info on playing jazz on a bass, without just getting Jazz bass results?

One of several reasons I don't learn to play jazz is that I don't know how to start exploring it. Whether on Talkbass, a search engine, youtube or otherwise, using the terms 'jazz' and 'bass' in a query will get you loads of results, but not the results we're looking for just now. What terms...

Speakers...Why Does The Myth that Size Matters, Still Exist?

"Acoustic basses will never work! They're just not big enough, you need a bigger surface to produce those frequencies! You can't deny the physics, ya stubborn morons!" "Speaker size has nothing to do with anything, it's all in how it was designed, ya stubborn morons!" I suppose the truth lies...

Help me sort through this GAS (p with rounds, j with flats???)

Both excellent, but fairly different to my ear. The Yamaha leans more into "authoritative" whereas the Sire, if you ask me, is in fact the best bass for metal. You know, I've been meaning to try that and I keep forgetting. Did it years ago and really liked it, but I had no real idea what I was...

Help me sort through this GAS (p with rounds, j with flats???)

Let's see if I can keep this in a reasonably small nutshell. I'm a roundwounds guy. 5 strings are non-negotiable. And there's no tone in the world more authoritative, more rock & roll, more monstrous to my ear than a P-style with rounds. The tone I have in mind there is captured perfectly in my...

I would like to know your opinions and personal experience with 5 string PJ basses . Looking for one …

Ibanez are cool, but if you're a little tired of choosing them before you've even gotten your new instrument, sounds like you might as well branch out. Schecters give me more of a "Whoa.... now that's a solid instrument..." feel when I pick them up than anything else I've touched. Not...

    Bass in a Worship Group

My take: if your goal is more to fit the genre, there are standards and general rules for how you should sound and what you should play. In a lot of ways, that's right and good. People expect it, they can easily follow it, the band will know how to work with what you're doing. It can create a...

Is there a Yamaha BB club? There is now!

Hi, all. 5-string flatwound sets for these basses. I have no doubt this has been discussed repeatedly, but I'm having minimal success with the search function. Most of what I've found is "_______ is mostly a good set, but the B string is useless." So do we just not have a good option? Stick with...

Any way to make a center detent easier to find quickly?

Yeah, there's a real aspect of "how often do you have to make these adjustments in the middle of a song?" But hey, sometimes it comes up, and I figure it's in the large category of things you want to skip only when you choose to, never because you can't do it.

Any way to make a center detent easier to find quickly?

With 3 EQ knobs and a pickup blend, I rely a lot on the detents to keep a sort of home base. And there's the active/passive switch that turns the 100% tone knob into a "blast the highs!!!" treble boost in one direction, or the flat treble into a 50% tone knob in the other direction. I just keep...

    Best video game music

Final Fantasy X is one of my favorites. When a pretty girl in college played To Zanarkand on the piano is the moment I decided to marry her (which I did!). And the flipping battle theme, man. Come on.

(5 string) P Bass: "1 with rounds, 1 with flats." So which flats?

I'm pretty comfortable with rounds. They make sense to me, they work the way I expect expect. But my (admittedly limited) history with flats is that they just sound like neutered rounds. I haven't found whatever it is you all have that inspires such romance in the way we talk about flats on a p...

I need a logo and slogan. Please help!

I don't reckon the general public know enough about basses to understand any parallels you'd make, but maybe you can make a play on 'base' or 'basis.' What makes a bass an eligible workhorse?

I really wanted to add that because it's obviously essential, but realistically they're all blocks of wood bolted together with some internal wiring. I've never picked up a bass that didn't feel like it could get smashed on the floor a few times and still do it's job afterwards. I guess neck...

What makes a bass an eligible workhorse?

Mostly a bedroom player here, but realized recently that I have two pretty solid basses and don't know which to bring if the need arises. Either one would work, but I felt the need to get a real reliable, fit-the-bill, look and sound professional workhorse bass. Picked out a goal, then realized...

Do I rightly remember something about Yamaha BB quality issues a while back? Resolved?

Do I rightly remember something about Yamaha BB quality issues a while back? Resolved?

Seems like I remember there being a "Man, the BB73_ QC is really having issues lately" discussion at some point. Was that real? And was it resolved? Prices went up again today, which pushes me more toward going used. But I don't love thinking of getting one from a period of janky instruments...

I hate to interfere with any joy, but figured I'd put my experience here for anybody getting excited. I've had the same company's playing card themed stickers on a bass for years, they're great. Got the white pearloid blocks recently for another bass, and if you pay any attention to them in...

When it's legitimately time to buy a bass, but GAS makes it confusing

A while back, I realized that the old dream was still alive, and I needed to go ahead and start saving for that Schecter Hellraiser C-VI. While in that process, I discovered a Sire V7 that has an aesthetic I've been hunting for years that would bring me so much joy to own and play. Then it...

Is there any sacrifice with active/passive circuits?

I generally just prefer passive, but once in a while I miss the utility of being active. So, active circuit with a passive switch, right? But I'm getting wary of "best of both worlds" stuff nowadays. Like coil splitting gives you humbuckers AND single coil tones!! ...but it doesn't really...

Need help choosing between two beginner basses

I'm always surprised how metal an orchestral bass sounds without the orchestra. Your genre needs may not be as far apart as they seem. And don't hesitate on your plan to get a 5 string. People will always try to talk you out of it, but if that's the instrument you want, get it. I never would...

What is the Sire Z7 neck pickup based on?

Bridge pickup is obviously their version of a MM pickup. But all the MM basses I see have either an H or an HH arrangement, no HS pairings. I've checked out some tone demos, and the Z7's single coil in the neck sounds murderous (though apparently unbalanced with the humbucker). I'm not sure I...

Which 10 songs should I learn to get a feel for Praise/Worship?

I know I'm not going to master a genre with ten songs, but it's a start. Just something to see what's usually expected of a bass player in this arena. I can jam along to rock or country, but I would have no idea what to do in church. And I'd like to be at least a little bit ready if the need...

How many P Basses do you need?

Looking through the comments, it looks like we're mostly doubling the number to make sure all our bases are covered. Let's see: 1 p bass 2 for rounds and flats 4 so each has fretted and fretless 8 for rosewood and maple 16 for thin and thick necks 32 for modest and exotic finishes 64 for pro...

A Super Swede, but with 5-strings. Anything close?

I don't know what to think about this world full of copies and knock offs. But I do know Hagström doesn't make a Super Swede fiver. And that's a rough truth. I just think they look so, so doggone classy. And they're neckthrough. And they're Swedish (heja Sverige!). I can live without the last...
