I have an Ibanez SGR for my "drops" as of now...set-up to D, but I use all the way down to B#. It's not happy. The Yamaha, even set-up to standard "E" tuning, handles the drops WAAAY better than the Ibby. I sincerely appreciate the "eyes up" for the violet. I would give you a golden finger tip...

Many good answers by members and references to manufacturers recommendations. All my experience, I've used the four-finger method. With standard tuners, I 'string' it normally, and measure four-fingers past the tuning peg. Hasn't failed me yet. Never too short, nor too much string. My favorites...

Yamaha RBX 1000 from 1989. Still use it today. Best sound, quickly rips from P to J sounds. Also in my "active" horde, my Ibanez SGR. Not as fun or versatile, but still sounds great(always de-tuned between "C# and D#).

in the early 80s...an Arbor Explorer copy and a Traynor-45 combo(with 2 12s) hardwired directly to a Crate B215. Sounded good if I was playing blues, but as soon as I got above the A string, sounded like a mudpie was hardwired to the strings.
