    Music or Personal-space ??

I often hang with my bandmates/their families and do non-band stuff, but definitely not organized outings where families are expected to join.

ProCo Rat for Bass? Yes or No.

If you never turn it off you can kind of tailor the amp's eq to suit it, but pretty much what everyone else said. It lops off a lot of low end. I would go for a bass-specific version with a clean signal blend.

Ever walk away from a stressful job?

I did it last spring. Got tired of working 11 hour days and never getting above water. Plus I was remote, which I was tired of. My current job has its moments, particularly since I have to manage people (it's in my job title), but the owners also get the importance of work/life balance, and...

    Pedal Board Suggestions

It sounds like your needs are pretty simple sounds-wise. I’d start with picking up a few pedals and letting that dictate what size board you need. I play a different genre of music, but tonally my needs are pretty similar. My chain is Darkglass Vintage Microtubes>Pigtronix Class A Boost...

How Often Do Your Guitarists Tune?

As a guitar and bass player I tune pretty frequently. Usually I can do it discretely so it doesn’t slow things down. I’ll even tweak a string mid-song (by ear) if I really need to. I know what some of you are saying about instruments and setup, but some are just inherently tricky. Even with...

    Bike helmets

Just go to a shop and try a few on. From a protection standpoint they are all more or less equal. Pick whatever’s comfortable that you like (or don’t completely hate) the look of. A helmet will only be worthwhile if you wear it.

^Awesome. I have my first show with the new band a week from Friday. They are not going to keep me that busy though.

    How many use a pick?

Combination. Some songs call for a pick sound, so I use one for those. I’m not sure why there is so much stigma about using a pick. It’s a way to get a certain sound. Sure, playing with a pick puts certain limits on what you can do, but limits aren’t a bad thing.

Going into battle vs. distorted guitars

As someone who is also a guitar player my guess is they need to chill with the gain. Heaviness is in the playing, not necessarily in a super distorted sound. See Black Sabbath, AC/DC, etc... A guitar sound that leaves space for others is a beautiful thing.

Totally agree, but this thread has gotten pretty wide ranging.

Do you play in two bands?

I just joined a third band (two on guitar, one on bass) All are original material, so using a sub isn’t an option. First come first served is my policy. I do the booking for one band, so that work gets spread around. Booker offers date. Band e-mail or group text goes out. Everyone responds...

Board suggestions. Do I need an octave or other mod pedal?

Doesn’t sound like there is a particular need for that stuff, so don’t buy it.

    New Wave / Punk forebears...

Johnny Marr gets a lot of love and rightfully so, but the Smiths would have been a very different band without Andy Rourke. Whoever wrote those lines he did a really good job playing them. I love Gary “Mani” Moufield’s playing on the 1989 Stone Roses debut. Such great simple hooks. I can only...

You never know about an audition

After a pretty long wait and much discussion I was offered a spot in this band yesterday and I accepted. The band I sing and play guitar in is putting out a new recording on Tuesday and playing a release show on the 23rd. The new band is playing on the 31st and can’t start rehearsing again...

    Hilarious Craigslist Ad

LOL. Those are my faves when I play guitar. Seems worth it, but I’d send it off for carbon dating before paying a “vintage” price.

a video for my band The Laughing Group's upcoming EP release

Thanks for checking it out. Yeah, Jeffrey always brings some interesting stuff to the table with his bass parts. In fact the part he wrote prompted me to change one of the chords in this song. The chord he was implying was a lot more interesting than what I came up with initially. :D

    "Compact" pedalboard advice (NYC)?

After re-reading the OP I think the bigger board is the way to go here. If 7-8 pedals is the baseline a Nano + won’t work unless several of the pedals are minis. 6 standard sized pedals is the limit on a Nano +.

    "Compact" pedalboard advice (NYC)?

I have two Nano + I use for guitar and a (regular) Nano I use for bass. I find both to be a great size. My preference is a smaller board that forces me to make thoughtful choices about what goes on it. When space is limited the difference between “must have” and “nice to have” becomes more...

Being in a band and dealing with Social Media

I’m at a point in life and in playing music where I just don’t care that much about “success”. Social media is just another form of pay to play as far as I’m concerned, only instead of money (though many companies will happily take that too) you’re handing over your personal data and creating...

Being in a band and dealing with Social Media

Like the OP I’m in an original band (two, actually). The band I lead has an Instagram page, and that’s more or less how we do the social media thing. I don’t have a personal Facebook account and have no desire to have one. I sometimes ponder starting a band one, but I don’t want to get dragged...

    Black P-Bass Pickguard Poll

That particular tort doesn’t look that great to me. Of the two black looks better. Good looking tort isn’t cheap. Sometimes Fenderparts aka Portlandmusic on ebay has good looking stuff, or there’s Spitfire if you really want to set the wallet on fire.

Blues guitar and the Fender Stratocaster...

Pickup selector switch positions 2 and 4 on a Strat have the bridge and middle or neck and middle positions out of phase. Early Strats had 3 way switches and players would try to get the switch to stay between them to get those sounds. Eventually Fender caved and made the switch a 5 way. These...

How many bass players in your band?

Both of my 3 piece bands are 2/3rds bass players. I play guitar in one and bass in the other. We’re actually pretty good about giving and receiving feedback. It’s never been a problem.

    My band doesn't do covers

There are a LOT of different ways to find music these days. You don't even have to put stock in the opinions of humans anymore. Algorithms have gotten pretty good. Just listen to Earth Wind and Fire, King Crimson, and 70s Neil Young for a while on Spotify and leave autoplay on. Compelling...

    My band doesn't do covers

There’s that “getting paid” thing again. I consider myself lucky to be able to play out at venues that are receptive to and supportive of original music. The response my projects get from audiences varies. One of the most rewarding things is having a complete stranger come up after our set and...

“My bass collection is mostly in the following price range...”

My “collection” consists of two basses. Both were on the low end of “expensive production” when they were made. Both purchased used. That’s generally the sweet spot for me. If I had zero basses I’d probably get a Vintera P and call it a day.

    My band doesn't do covers

There’s nothing wrong with playing covers. What I do take issue with is: “Nobody wants to hear your original music.” “You’ll never write anything that good.” “If you want to get paid you have to play covers.” People find satisfaction playing and listening to music in different ways.

    Recommended acoustic bass guitar?

If you want something you can take to the park or play around a campfire an acoustic bass is a fine choice. If that isn’t your situation an electric bass is a better choice for a first bass. Start with a small inexpensive amp. No need for anything fancy there.

Should I buy a cheap Bass VI?

Eastwood just announced this: Link Removed Love the look and the wider string spacing. Not cheap at $1300 though. I certainly don't dislike Peter Hook, but the signature aspect isn't a particular selling point for me.

    My band doesn't do covers

I’ve played original music all of my bass, drums, and guitar “career”. Beyond writing good music and performing well the trick (and I don’t claim to be good at it) is to find your audience. Don’t waste your time playing the wrong places with the wrong bands for the wrong people. Find...

2019 Trends in the pedal world

Me too! I use really minimal effects on bass and it would be pretty useless to me there. Guitar is a different story though. I think a lot of players are like me in that they prefer analog drives and boosts but like the flexibility of digital for a lot of the other stuff and prefer a simple...

2019 Trends in the pedal world

^Yeah. Synth pedals made huge leaps this year. Octave/pitch shift pedals have cooled off. Weird/ambient-centric multi-reverb pedals are now more of a thing. The Tube Screamer refuses to die but every company is eager to tell you how different theirs is. I think the trend for 2020 is going...

    Is this a bad sign?

Completely depends on your ability to follow and play by ear, and if that’s a way you can get used to working. If you like the music and the people I don’t see it as a problem necessarily.

POLL: Who needs an amp on some gigs because of vocals-only PA?

That’s how I interpreted it. I strongly prefer to use an amp whenever possible, but it isn’t strictly necessary.
