What attracts you to vintage Japanese basses?

I have two Ibanez musicians, an MC9240LE from '81 and an MC2940 from '86. Both are exceptional instruments, the MC9240LE is like a poor mans Alembic, it's the only production bass that's able to pull off a Stanley Clarke like tone. The MC2940 on the other hand is a little more conventional but...

How many mid controls do you need?

It really depends on the pickup configuration, e.g. my Ibanez TMB100 with (Dimarzio) PJ pups works very well with it's 2-band pre-amp. Most of my basses with humbuckers or wide aperture single coils require (IMHO) a mid knob (preferably parametric).

Pics of you playing your bass - Part 3

Long time ago (1997) with my Primus cover band :D (can you guess the song?)

    What would You do?

Are you sure the amp can push more? An amp in distress can cause distortion and loses grip on the woofer. The 15MB500 has a decent xmax (almost 8 mm), it can really handle some power. I've tested the Cyclops with an 800 watt (rms at 8 ohms) PA power amp and that amp was practically hitting it's...

    What would You do?

Are you sure the fart out is caused by the mechanical limitations of the 15MB500? Below a simulation of the Cyclops (black curve) vs 90 liter tuned to 42 hz (red curve). When staying above the tuning frequency, both designs can handle at least 400 watts before exceeding xmax (which isn't even xlim).

    Typo (obviously)

    What would You do?

Like Beans says, first try to fix that vibrating cab. About two BB115T cabs equipped with each an Oberton 15MB500. If tuned correctly and you have enough amplifier power then I would say that two "regular" ported cabs will be louder. That said, I'm not sure if the Hartke amp is able to push the...

    Preamps similar to Glockenklang?

I have the 3-band Glock in one of my basses paired with Bartolini Singularity pickups. It's a very good (neutral and transparant) pre-amp and I have nothing to complain about the treble control. You would expect some hiss/noise with such a high set point but it is remarkably noise free.

    Tension of D'addario strings?

Do you happoen to know if there's any difference between these two? https://lordofthestrings.nl/bas/electrisch/4-snarig/fodera-fodera-x-dr-4-40100-n.html https://lordofthestrings.nl/bas/electrisch/4-snarig/fodera-n40100-xl-light-nickel-extra-long-scale.html

    Tension of D'addario strings?

These Fodera strings (nickel DR 4-40100-N) are indeed pricey (around 42 euro's). Fodera doesn't provide a tension chart though. Maybe I should give those a try then.

    Tension of D'addario strings?

Did you manage to find a balanced 0.40 set? I'm looking for a 0.40 set for my Ibanez MC2924 to slightly lower the tension on the neck (currently I use d'addario EXL165SL on al my 4-string basses) I'm gravitating towards the GHS L3045 set which seems to have a really balanced strings tension.

ET Pro Speakers - Planar Magnetic Cab

I wonder if the TSP's will get you anywhere with this type of concept. Maybe we need a little more specs about the whole construction and measurements (including harmonic distortion and the like).

ET Pro Speakers - Planar Magnetic Cab

The bass amp doesn't seem to use a planar driver, it's a totally different concept. The description on youtube reads as follows: "The magnet isn’t “dead weight”—it’s an active part of the driver. The voice coil’s pole piece is coupled to a rear diaphragm that resonates around 42 Hz, while the...

    The Ibanez Club (Part 6)

I did the same to my EHB1006MS, it really makes a huge difference, much smoother and more clarity! (not sure if it's VM3 or BEQ3) It's mystery to me why Ibanez uses the other voicing as factory default. It sounds way to clanky (for me), it may be good for rock and metal but not for funk, jazz...

ET Pro Speakers - Planar Magnetic Cab

I'm more concerned about the SPL not about how it sounds, its linearity or the wattage. Still not convinced.

ET Pro Speakers - Planar Magnetic Cab

Excursion of planars is pretty limited. I would suspect that if one would increase the "cone" movement then the efficiency will drop significantly due to the increased distance to the magnets. I'm no expert with planar drivers but I know how they work. Maybe ET Pro can prove us wrong, until...

ET Pro Speakers - Planar Magnetic Cab

True, that's why you need lots of cone area, large xmax and DSP

ET Pro Speakers - Planar Magnetic Cab

Should behave somewhat similar to open-baffle dipole subs, room position is key to achieve even bass response. They interact differently with room modes then non-dipole designs. When setup correctly, an open baffle sub can create a qualitative superior low-end experience compared to regular...

ET Pro Speakers - Planar Magnetic Cab

So...it should be able to compete with a 410? A 410 with modern drivers can shove some air, I'm very curious if their statement holds up in the SPL department.

Most famous bassist’s axe you’ve actually played?

Well, I got to hold (and get a feel of) Michael Manring's Zon Hyper bass. And last year I shortly tried Dane Alderson's bass (Yellow Jackets).

ET Pro Speakers - Planar Magnetic Cab

Planar for bass guitar, nah.... Yes, I'm skeptical and rightly so, Yesterday this ET Pro planar design appeared in my social media feed, tried to find some more about it on the net but got dissapointed. I've heard full range Planars (Magnepan) for hifi years ago, sounded amazing for vocals and...

1x15 (sealed) cabinet with eminence delta 15LFA

Yeah, it's also to big for my taste. Sealed enclosures are much more forgiving "tuning" wise though. If you want a sealed enclosure and use the delta 15LFA then I would reduce the size to aprox. 75 liters. This wil give a slight mid-bass bump but it will also keep the cone excursion at bay so it...

    New Ibanez Mode series

That's kinda true about Nate's demos, he makes every bass sounds great. That said, the 5-string sounds excellent in his hands. The thumb 'n pop tone is damn solid!

    New Ibanez Mode series

These are probably stacked coils, that's why they cancel hum but retain the clarity of regular single coils.

    Speaker break-in: myth or reality?

5 to 10% change is quite normal but it really doesn't matter that much because not only the Fs changes. If you would put the numbers (TSPs) in one of these enclosure sims you will notice that the curves of before and after break-in are nearly identical.
  32. Arjank

    Speaker break-in: myth or reality?

It completely depends on the type of driver. That said, in most cases it's a myth. With all the systems I've build there was only one that really required break in. It was a small speaker with a 4" full range driver in it. I've first build one speaker, which got enough play during testing and...

    Bartolini question

I equipped my EHB1500 with a set of CBC's. The bridge pup is a tad to dark without eq, therefore I would choose the neck version for your setup.

    R.I.P. Herman Deinum

    R.I.P. Herman Deinum

Last December the 5th the Netherlands lost (IMHO) their most original bass player (bass guitarist would be a better description).... Herman Deinum had a unique style and sound that was completely his own, just a few notes and you knew it was him. His style was rythmic, melodic and in your face...

Ibanez Ergonomic Headless Bass (EHB) club

It's indeed a dual-action truss rod on my EHB1006MS, works like a charm  I was a bit cautious at first because it takes a few quarter turns in the "neutral" position before you feel resistance again.

Ibanez Ergonomic Headless Bass (EHB) club

The frets on my two EHB's (EHB1500 and EHB1006MS) are just about perfect (level, fit and finish), I like my action low so uneven frets are a no go. Maybe I just got lucky with the craftsmanship on these two instruments.
