ET Pro Speakers - Planar Magnetic Cab

Well kidos, it's real.
I was at their event last night in Costa Mesa (next to Anaheim and the NAMM Show) and put my ears on it. Holy cow! This thing is something special. I know one of their associates Giovanni DiSimone and he has been telling me about this for at least a year. I was skeptical like you all, no more.
I am starting a new company Basses Only (.com) and over the next few months we will start to show up in the typical places. We intend to carry this amp, well, if we have to carry it, it's not heavy! 16 lbs, haha. 400 watts, incredible sound. Linear like a mofo. It was in a horrible room (craft beer place called Synth Brewery, great people too!) that was all concrete and it still sounded killer.
The bass amp will start delivering in the View attachment 7417163summer. I expect to have the NAMM show prototype in a few weeks after they finish getting its voicing dialed in. I will then start showing it around So Cal and I expect that people will be blown away like I was. What a cool product.

Just went to their web site and saw that they did the fan blade "woofer", I remembered reading about that some time ago but had forgotten who built it.
The limitations were very significant and real. It was a great idea from a theoretical perspective though.

The bass amp doesn't seem to use a planar driver, it's a totally different concept.

The description on youtube reads as follows:
"The magnet isn’t “dead weight”—it’s an active part of the driver. The voice coil’s pole piece is coupled to a rear diaphragm that resonates around 42 Hz, while the front side is tuned higher. The result is smoother bass-range response in a significantly lighter form factor. Efficiency is the headline: about 99 dB at 1 watt. With 350 watts, the rig can push beyond 120 dB"

Saw this video yesterday. But why the hell didn't they play a bass thru it so we could at least get a cursory listen????:banghead:

We tried. It is hard to tell from that video - which was processed by an AI powered program to help remove background noise - but there was a ton of noise, and the booth next door was doing a demo or something. They were far louder than NAMM normally allows. It is amazing that you could hear him talking at all (I could not hear him and I was standing right next to him). Unfortunately, while this AI noise removal works fairly well at isolating speech and blocking out noise (music), it is not as good at picking which music to let through and which to block out.

I will say that it certainly sounded like a competent bass combo, but we really could not tell any of the nuance or character, considering how loud the neighboring booth was at the time. We did shoot some video, though, and if we can clean it up any, I will post some video. We are also hoping to get a model in for review, once they have production units available.

We did actually "fight back" a little and turned it up some, but then they just turned up louder, LOL. We opted to take the high road and backed off. :sour:
 
So it's an electromagnetic transducer, thus it behaves according to Thiele-Small theory. That's not meant as a good or bad thing, but just a technical detail about how it might be expected to work. The patent seems to point towards the speaker being used in an open-back cabinet.

Yes. I have not owned them, but I have read about and auditioned large Magna pans. Looks like MG1 is the model 64"x19"x2".

I have also have a bit of time listening to some of the medium Infinity Reference cabs that used planar mids and tweeters--One of the RS4 variants may be the biggest model I heard.

What I remember about the big Magnapans. First I want to say I thought they sounded awesome overall. Really good for classical and acoustic. Some might say not great for rock or other commercial music. Negatives (IMHO): They were inefficient and had pretty limited headroom. The available SPL was fine for home HiFi, but totally insufficient for live music applications. The lows were somewhat lean, especially given the size and cost.

AFAIK LF response was limited by excursion and because they are very thin dipoles. Basically the pressure waves from the front and back cancel. For those who wanted exceptional bass performance, I believe there was an option to add some traditional subwoofers.
Yep, back in the day I thought the big Magnapans sounded good but sounded best with some sort of sub or boxed woofer to go with to fill out the low end

In the video he explained, the "driver" has a driven piece on front and a kind of passive radiator on back. A combo of sorts. Would definitely like to see actual pics, not just pat. drawings.

It seems like a fancier DML speaker with the transducer magnets mounted in the panel and the stationary voice coil sandwiched between front and back panel. Curious how the folks on diyaudio DML mega thread would see this.
 
I wonder if the TSP's will get you anywhere with this type of concept.
Maybe we need a little more specs about the whole construction and measurements (including harmonic distortion and the like).
It would be the definite starting point, as you could estimate the shape of the response curve at low frequencies. Of course nothing beats measured response curves.
