    Mastodon - The Hunter

i can understand people not liking it, but calling it out for being "mainstream" is beyond me. this is such a relentlessly weird record, i can't really see it having much "mainstream" appeal. vocal effects? theremin(or a theremin like synth/guitar tone)? the compositions are still extremely...

Gear That Gets It Done- Your Favorite Workhorse

i've got an older Sunn Coliseum that has proven itself to be a tank over and over again. never had any issues with it through years of giving it hell. it doesn't see much use anymore(i've since moved on to a Viva Analog 360+ preamp/power amp setup), but when it does get fired up it works like a...

    Mastodon - The Hunter

i'm glad someone else digs "Thickening". i'm seeing a whole lot of hate towards that track. "Bedazzled Fingernails" gets me every time too, but i don't see much opinion either way on that one. such an amazing track.

    Mastodon - The Hunter

i've been doing the same with The Hunter and Blood Mountain. i think it is fair to say that the new one compliments much of their older material, the one exception maybe being Remission. it is such a great distillation of their strengths and their development as composers to this point.

    Fire!!! What do you grab?

dogs, Rickenbacker 4001, whichever guitar is closest to my 4001, wallet/passport, laptop, text books, clothes. in that order.

    Rickenbacker buying advice, please

i got my '78 4001 from ebay, but i had a friend i trust who lived near where it was located so i had him check it out first. occasionally some good deals pop up on there(like mine), so if you either don't mind taking a chance or you have a way of checking it out it can really be a viable option.

    Mastodon - The Hunter

i think it is absolutely wonderful. it FEELS like a logical step forward, combining much of what they have done in the past. the instrumentation is amazing, as always. some of the most thoughtful and complicated stuff they have written. definitely a different vibe though, and i can see plenty of...

    Your favorite album of 2011?

now that it has leaked and i've had a chance to actually hear the whole thing, Mastodon's "The Hunter" will be a tough one to beat for me. easily their weirdest record, and quite possibly their best. crushingly heavy, even during the more subdued moments, some GORGEOUS compositions, and probably...

the entire new record as well as Damnation are all clean. bits and pieces on others have clean vocals but mostly mixed with screams.

    Seymour Duncan Basslines P/J set.

i use this combination in a Fender Prophecy II. i LOVE the way it sounds. i've got it set up for v/v/t and a 3 way switch. plenty of variety there and TONS of bite.

    Nilsson Schmilsson "The Moonbeam Song"

i'm not certain, but most of the studio footage i have seen from that period shows a sunburst P bass. edit: though i'm not sure if it was Herbie or Klaus Voormann in the footage.

Acoustic Just Jumped The Shark Again

Seymour Duncan 1/4 pound jazz PUP's

i've got one P and one J in an old Fender Prophecy II. I LOVE the way they sound together, and also how they sound individually(modified it to have a 3 way toggle with volume/volume/tone). I can't speak to a traditional J or P, but i am definitely a fan of them.

    Stonerguys! Your eq and gear?

i use a modified Fender Prophecy II and Ric 4001 through various pedals(Iron Ether Oxide and a Tubescreamer for dirt and plenty others for weirdness) split with a Boss LS-2, going to two amps. Why Do people prefer thinner necks?

i prefer slimmer necks because i have tiny hands. i personally feel like i can play cleaner when playing faster phrases if i'm not struggling to hit the next note. i absolutely believe fractions of an inch can help with this.

    Educate me on Sunn amps..

i've owned a 200s, several Coliseums and a Concert Bass. i can't speak to the Coliseum 300s, but every original Coliseum i've used has had the ability to be deafeningly loud, and i also really enjoy the way they sound. The 200s was one of the best sounding amps i've ever owned, but it lacked in...

Gibson Guitar raided by the Feds! Is your bass environmentally incorrect?

the richest of the rich pay a lower percentage of their earnings BY PERCENTAGE then those in the working class. also, there is much evidence showing that lower tax rates correlate to less job growth. look at the decline in employment in relation to the Bush tax cuts. the timelines are...
