Charlie Parker Omni Book has been helpful for me lately in terms of building language (I've been using mostly as sight reading practice). Probably the best thing though would be listening to players you like and playing with other people.

The MXR Bass Octave has a good clean octave down sound (the "girth" knob). At this point I've somehow acquired 3 octave pedals (mxr, boss oc2 and pog) and between them, the mxr has my favorite clean sound, the oc 2 has my favorite dirty/synth sound and the pog is best for polyphonic and octave up.

One thing that I'd recommend is to practice not just playing ahead of the beat but also on and behind it. Practicing all of these different placements helps build your understanding of each individual one and also makes it easier to adjust your playing to lock in with different drummers, etc...

Yeah I will second ear fatigue and slowly turning up the volume as the practice goes on. You may start at a good volume for your set up but turn it up subtly until it goes out of that range.

I couldn't quite tell from reading this but the only thing I can think of was you may have been sending a powered signal through the snake (coming from the output of an amp) and you want it to be unpowered. If that was the case, it may explain the hum but otherwise I don't have any other ideas.

Yeah, it seems rather strange, especially considering it is a laminated instrument. I really do love the sound when it plays well and doesn't have issues but am thinking that I may have to replace it for practical reasons. Maybe considering one of the lower end uptons or something newer.
