    35inch scale bass strings

Just strung my bass with DR 'lo-riders' and am VERY pleased with the fit and the tone. They have no taper and are handmade, and the E string is heavier than the blue steels I mentioned in my previous post. As someone else mentioned, they claim that all of their strings fit basses from 34"-36"...

    Things bassist hate.

Illinois German: it's a reference to the original blues brothers movie, at one point during the fairly frequent car chases Belushi tells Akroyd "I hate Illinois nazis". Pretty sure he wasn't a bass player, so the op must have been saying that he, as a bassist, shares that worldview.

    35inch scale bass strings

I have a Jackson 35" string thru and use Dean Markley Blue Steel Long scale because there is no taper, although they are brighter than I really care for (which is why I'm reading this thread...)

    Changing band name, thoughts?

You should call it "Christmas". Everyone already knows what that is and most people like it, so when they hear it they'll want to like you too... (smiling and hiding) ~Ian

    Bluegrass?

Thanks again guys! I found the bluegrass section after I posted my question (using the search function of all things) but am glad I posted because there have been some interesting things here, especially regarding bands to listen to.

    Bluegrass?

I have played around with washtub bass in the past, more for "shucks" and giggles than anything else. It's really hard to get a consistent tone or precise notes out of them, and it's crucial that you use an old school tub with heavy metal (no Chinese alloys). I suppose with a lot of practice one...

    Bluegrass?

Russell: could you be more specific about what to do with my right hand in between notes? I am trying to visualize what you're saying and drawing a blank. Are you referring to something that can be done on a bass guitar or on a standup only? Also, for the general discussion: is playing an...

    Bluegrass?

Thanks! I don't do any of that funky stuff anyway, at least not outside the solitary confines of my practice room! I will definitely check that band out.

    Bluegrass?

I posted this in technique and got no replies, so I'm trying here: I am a lifelong hard rock player who is growing more and more acoustic. I recently hung out with some bluegrass players and have decided next time I see those guys I'm bringing my acoustic bass... What can I practice between now...

Do you agree with this statement.

Whole heartedly agree and have said the same to a number of people over the years. I think the reason is twofold: bass is easier to learn because the rhythm parts are simpler, especially in rock music; on the flip side it is harder (and far less satisfying) to sit down with a book of sheet music...

    Blugrass and Zydeco...

Hey all, I am a lifelong hard rock player who has been growing more and more acoustic of late. While visiting my folks in Tallahassee I met some cool cats and heard some great acoustic music, mostly the above genres. I was wondering of anyone could give me some pointers on chords, scales, finger...

    Mid-priced Acoustic/AEB suggestion.

Jay: thanks for the input. I have played several AEB-10 basses but all of them have had either feet or bridge buzz, is tours the exception to the rule, or are there some good ones out there?

    Reccomend Me an Acoustic

Schwaaa: if I were you I would forever regret not buying a Tacoma for $500. I am still kicking myself 6 years later for not buying an Olympia for $400. I would do just about anything for a Thunderchief, but they are hard to find an EXPENSIVE since Fender put the company out of business.

    Mid-priced Acoustic/AEB suggestion.

I am stuck between those 2 basses too! My old local had a used Ibanez EWB that I didn't buy because I didn't want to move it across the country in a moving truck, but now I am having trouble finding one in S. Florida. I recently tried out the EQABA at the Sarasota GC, and was really impressed...

    observations from a newbie

Gallien-Krueger is awesome in your price range. Just avoid their cheapest stuff. Or search around for some 80's Peavey gear, their vintage stuff is great but their newer stuff isn't any better than Crate, which suffices for <$500, but has a very sterile tone.

Why are TBers so against drop or detuning?

@rockstarbassist: a string doesn't know what it's tuned to, but a piece of metal can be stretched with constant changes in tensioning, and guitars which are frequently retuned to different pitches tend to wear out strings faster, in my experience (15 years bass, 7 guitar). As far as flogging a...

Why are TBers so against drop or detuning?

For me the biggest thing is not having a consistent interval between all 4 strings when in a drop-d tuning. I also don't line the way my d and g feel a full step down. I also don't play 5 string, so if I need a d, c or b I play it on the a string, if necessary I play my e's higher to still go...

Thoughts about buying a bass without playing it first?

I bought my last bass, a Jackson CMG from musicians friend because none of my local dealers carry the brand and I absolutely wanted it (I also considered an ESP ltd, but was unimpressed with the workmanship). I have no regrets. For a used, b stock or >$1000 I dont think I would buy without at...

Mine would never be up there anyway, I'm way more comfortable in a roadhouse than a prog rock set anyway.

    new to recording, what equipment?

Damn autocorrect. "Nehru get" is supposed to be behringer in my above post... And to answer your other question, no, you do not need a di for the m audio, it has preamp functionality built in (I'm saving up for the model listed earlier in this thread...).

    new to recording, what equipment?

Search for a 'USB guitar interface' on amazon, they make some with a 1/4" input and a headphone jack plus a USB out to your pc/Mac that do not require a preamp or di and sell for about $30. Nehru get makes them. But I bought a no name because I hate behringer. You also need a program to record...

how long have you played bass

When I was fourteen I used the first hundred dollar bill I ever owned to put a peavey milestone p bass on layaway, been going strong for 15 years. All my friends parents had bought them guitars already, but no one had a bass and we wanted to start having bands, as the one kid with a job it fell...

Is Anyone Here Generally OK With Guitar Center?

I've bought some things there, and got a great deal on a Les Paul, amp and case when I branched into guitar because I bought them as a set (not a package, I picked everything out myself). That said, I went in recently and was appalled at the customer service and selection. Also, no patch cables...

Which Queens of the Stone Age album to start?

My fav is certainly "rated R", followed by the eponymous first album and then the uber trendy "songs for the deaf". I have not listened to any of their albums since Nick was sacked, although Josh's new band with SFTD drummer Dave Grohl and bass legend JPJ is my favorite album of 2010 hands down...

    Things bassist hate.

p.s: strings don't really cost that much when you account for the fact that they last so much longer than guitar strings. I change the strings on my bass once or twice a year, when I was in a band and gigged 5-6 times a month, three times a year. Bedroom guitarists change their strings twice a...

    Things bassist hate.

-Converted guitar players (who have yet to understand what a bass player does in a band, it's not a rhythm guitar tuned down an octave!) -Chord-crazed bass players. -an hour of slap bass. I like the sound of slap, and it has a place, usually about 1:40 of each 4 minute song. -Finding cases for...

    Greg Bennett Acoustic Bass

I've played 2 in stores (back in WA) and was really impressed with the tone and volume, but didn't buy either because both had (different) quality control issues. I am pondering buying one from amazon ($370 with a hard case) but worry that both of the ones I have seen in real life had issues...

Decision Making Problem (Buying a new bass, or upgrading existing ones?) Need Help

As a fellow CMG owner with a second bass that serves a very specific role (ABG) and a healthy penchant for metal (thrash) I would probably choose to upgrade my current axes and save up for a new amp (or DI box). For the CMG I would get the exact same EMG humbuckers and preamp (both active, 2x9...

    jackson concert basses

Hey, I have and love a CMG in black forest green. When I bought from musicians friend (none of my locals carry new jacksons) they listed the fretboard as ebony whereas their site now says rosewood... Mine is very dark anyhow. The passive-aggressive EMGs do take a little getting used to, and...

Some Not-So-Famous Bassists Who Still Love to Play!

Hey all, new to the forum and this seemed as good a place as any to introduce myself. I'm Ian and I recently relocated from the Northwest to the Southeast, to go back to school (and secretly to form an epic southern rock band). This is my old band Brick Pistol, but I'm a little more...
