    Insulting your potential core audience

When I go to a show, I want to hear music, not the artist's political views. I respect their opinions and what they post on social media but if it gets too radical, promotes racism or violence, or includes lies about politicians and public figures, I delete and block them. Personally, I never...

    Cab for the Ampeg PF-500

Agreed but part of being heard is the ability to move air. A 410 will do this better than a 115.

Road Ready makes some great rack cases. I have my 6 Pro in one. Racks come in different depths for amps and effects. Make sure you get the correct depth.

    Starting Out

Funny you say that about Squiers because I just read an article where a very well known studio musician who has been recording since the 1960s with many well known acts said the exact opposite. They said that MIM Fenders are great for the money but they wouldn't recommend Squiers. They also...

    SHocked and befuddled!!

If you are playing in a venue that is large enough to use a PA, your amp is basically there as a stage monitor for you and the band. Some of your stage sound will project to the audience but most of what they hear is the PA. This is most likely what you were experiencing.

    What would you do?

I wouldn't do the gig. He owes you money and its a long ride. I left a band that was touring and opening for some well known artists because I wasn't getting paid as agreed.

Clipped a string too short. But how short is too short?

There is a chance it will slip out. You generally want it to wrap around at least 2 or 3 times.

Any reason to get a DI box if you have a PF500?

Most soundmen have complained about noise when using the DI on the various heads I have owned. A separate DI is always a good idea because if your head ever craps out at a gig, you can always run direct through the P.A.

singing and playing at the same time

When I first started I had a problem playing and singing at the same time. Then I read an article that said everytime you practice to just "mouth" the words without actually singing them. That way you are not focusing on singing in key. Start out with songs that you can play without thinking...

    The Band Leader Thread

Not true. I have seen several people who have started bands get fired. One band I was in did it to the BL who had founded the band. The keyboard player, drummer and I told him that we were moving on without him, found a new guitarist/singer and continued gigging. I have been the band leader in...

Why "Fender" sound on a boutique bass?

I think there are some people like the idea of having a boutique bass just because they want to be different or are trying to impress other players. If you want a bass that sounds like a Fender, buy a Fender. If you want one that sounds like an Alembic, buy an Alembic, etc.

Anyone ever order a Fender headstock decal from sentinel custom graphics?

NICE! If you replace your neck with a non-Fender and put a Fender decal on it, yes it is lame. Putting a Fender decal on the headstock does not make it a Fender. The only reasons to do it would be to make others believe you are playing a real Fender and make yourself feel better about...

Another one of those, "What would you do?" threads.

Good points. I am going to agree with you and Kmonk on the overall argument. If bands do not spend the time to rehearse they may never know how good they can be or realize their potential. I also don't understand why anyone would join a band and not want to rehearse. Its one thing to be a hired...

    What's Your String History?

I started out many years ago using Rotosound. Since then, I have tried Dean Markley, D'addario, and DR. I was in a band and the guitar player had a deal with Curt Mangan strings so I tried a set and loved them. I have had a deal with Curt Mangan for several years and wouldn't think of using...

Geddy Lee Jazz - MIM vs. MIJ

I'm with you. I have always played MIA Fenders and have heard good things about MIJ models. I have a friend with an MIM that I didn't like at all. In my opinion, get an MIJ.

music vs. health vs. career vs. happy?

I am also diabetic and have a serious digestive disorder so I can relate. Health always has to come first. Without good health, it makes it difficult to play music, work or enjoy life in general. I have also had more than my share of repetitive motion injuries. My doctor suggested that I place...

Love / hate eelationship with Stingrays?

I've had one Stingray. I liked the tone but found that it had deadspots around the 7th and 9th frets so I sold it. I have been reluctant to try them again and have been using MIA Fenders and Alembics.

Guys Who Only Play Covers: What Happened?

Everybody is different and has their own reason for playing an instrument. I have played in bands that did covers, bands that did originals, bands that did a combination of both and even a tribute band. Most of the musicians I've met never had any intention of creating their own music. They...

I have owned vintage and newer Fenders, Alembic, Carvin, Washburn, Spector, G & L, Musicman, Schechter and Ibanez. What's the #2 Bass?

There is a huge difference between being influential and being widely used. To me, influential, is based on what popular artists are using or have used in the past. If the answer to your question was based solely on being influential, then I would say Ric, Gibson and Alembic. If you are...

High End Guitars and crowd perception (Rush Content)

Do you let other bands/musicians use your gear?

I opened for a well known band and their bass player asked to use my cabs because he was having problem with his. I agreed. He ended up running 2 SVT 4 Pro heads in bridge mode and blew my speakers. He didn't offer to pay for them or even offer an apology. Since then nobody uses my gear but me.
