    Double Bass Gaiatone Fingerboards

I should also mention, Robbie has a special blade for this work. Normal ones will dull quite quickly. I think they are obtained through the Gaiatone manufacturing company.

    Double Bass Gaiatone Fingerboards

Hi everyone, I have an update for you all! After giving myself about a year to live with the new fingerboard, I decided to make some changes. When I replaced the board, I was using a gut setup with wound A and E. While this is still my preferred setup, the various hassles (and expense) of...

Double Bass Charlie Haden Live at the Jazz Record Mart

I just came across this album today, apparently it was released last month on Record Store Day. A live solo concert in Chicago from 1988. Beautiful playing from Charlie, and well recorded! Surprised there wasn't more fanfare over the release, or maybe I just live under a rock. Anyways, enjoy...

Double Bass The Kay Bass Club + Engelhardts, King & other old US made Plywood Basses.

Yes! I've been gigging with it quite frequently, actually. If I need more juice, I've had good results mic-ing it with an RE20, and letting the PA do the heavy lifting. I mostly play old school blues and rock n roll, some jazz, so I don't need huge volume and bottom end. And the drummers I play...

    NBD! (K)

Been getting acquainted with this lovely Kay K-162 bass. I think it is from 1953. It needed some neck work and a re-fret, but is good to go now!

Double Bass What do I need to have two different sound settings on stage?

Jason, I'm curious, I don't do much bowing at all, but when I do, the acoustic volume and amplified signal are always louder, not quieter. I also strive for simplicity, but have a Felix as well. It's been handy for me this summer with several festival backline/soundman scenarios, where I have...

It's a Greenboy F115. And yes, it sounds killer! I've got a F112 that is great as well.

A look inside! I'm going to leave the chassis in place, but components are all point to point wired.

    New Amp Day!

It really does. The upright sounds surprisingly great straight in, though when it gets loud it's best to use a preamp to buffer the piezo signal. Still working on getting it dialed in.

    New Amp Day!

I just want to show off this rare unicorn I picked up the other day! It's a 100 watt tube bass head from CNY builder Chuck Dean's Retro-King line. It's kind of like a mini SVT, or a souped up B15. Bass, treble, mid EQ shift, gain and master volume knobs. Passive and active inputs. 2,4, and 8 ohm...

    Double Bass Gaiatone Fingerboards

Hey everyone, just wanted to give you an update. I got my bass back yesterday, I went with the Gaiatone fingerboard! The bass ended up needing a lot more work than I expected, and it feels like a different instrument that I am slowly getting to know. I can give you my first impressions regarding...

    Double Bass Gaiatone Fingerboards

Thanks everyone for weighing in, and especially Geoff, for your videos on this subject! I'll let you know what I decide, maybe I'll post some 'after' pics here. Whichever material I choose, it will be harder than the original rosewood fingerboard, so less dressing in my future either way!

    Double Bass Gaiatone Fingerboards

This video will explain some of your questions! Don, I will be reaching out to Joey to ask if he would recommend anything different from the specs he has provided, for those of us with more old school preferences. I'll keep you posted!

Double Bass New Upton Bass Strings

I think there's been another string demo video posted on their Instagram. I've never been into the 'growl' thing in my own playing and preferences, and hearing it on strings other than the E string, it just sounds like he's playing on a poorly set up bass. Kinda bizarre. Is it just me?

    Double Bass Gaiatone Fingerboards

I took my 1938 American Standard to Robbie McIntosh today for some repair and setup work. A fingerboard dressing is one of the issues, and he remarked on how thin the original board is. I want to keep this bass long term, so a replacement fingerboard will be necessary down the road. One of the...

Double Bass Bob Cranshaw's Upright Bass

I don't know if it's been mentioned elsewhere, but I believe Lorin Cohen has Bob's double bass. Please correct me if I'm wrong! It's nice to know these iconic instruments are still being played.

Double Bass GUTS ARE SO MUCH FUN!!!

I had a full Gamut set with a Pistoy G and D on my bass for a bit, but I think I prefer low twist style gut strings. I am terrible with the bow, and have a crappy fiberglass one currently, but noticed a lot more squawks and shrieks (than usual 🤣) when bowing the Pistoy G on my bass. I would...

    Official Ampeg Portaflex Club

Thanks you, beans! I will investigate different speakers. The previous owner has a stash, it might be with him. Out of curiosity, what is the model should I be looking for, that corresponds with my NC? The current Jensen is indeed a lovely sounding speaker, though I wouldn't balk at having a...

    Official Ampeg Portaflex Club

Ask and you shall receive! On closer inspection, it looks to be an NC model. This one has a kickback leg and socket, the leg is mounted in the cabinet. Did my best to get a clear pic of the speaker back, it appears to be a Jensen. Probably not going to open up the amp itself, but let me know if...

    Official Ampeg Portaflex Club

I got this pristine 1964 B15-N last week. Aside from replacing the carry handle, and a re-tubing, it's all original. It sounds so good! I'm not sure about many of the specifics, though the previous owner did mention a double baffle arrangement inside the cabinet. Happy to take more pictures for...

Double Bass Who is this bassist?

Very interesting! He is plucking the strings with his RH thumb on the passages that it isn't anchored to the fingerboard. You can clearly see this on his solo during the first tune. I wonder if this was common technique during the early swing/big band era. I know some early Nashville country...

Double Bass Yamahiko Double Bass Pickup

Recently added another sensor after using a single element for a while. I think it is an improvement for me and my bass (a bassy American Standard with Chorda strings). I used to have to EQ out a lot of bass, sounds and feels much more even now. I did notice when installing the 2nd sensor, that...

Double Bass String ID help - Gut string with silks

Got home yesterday, and snapped this comparison photo today. Plain G is on the left, Tynex wound G right. Judging by the pegbox photo, I'm going with the Tynex wound G.

Double Bass String ID help - Gut string with silks

I believe it's a Golden Spiral G. They made wrapped and unwrapped sets. I have one of each, the plain ones are probably my favorite gut uppers. The Goldentones I had were an orangish red at both silks, if I remember correctly, though it's been a while.

Double Bass Anyone changing up their setup for this year?

I picked up this Orange AD200 last week. I've been enjoying learning how to dial it in with my basses. The 'just on the verge of break-up/break-up when you dig in' thing with my flatwound strung P-bass is addicting, and easy to get at sane volumes. Huge clean sound with the upright. Using an...
