We are the Background Music - Best Approach?

I have a three-piece band (guitar, drums and bass). We play a healthy mix of jazz (eg. Sunny, Sissy Strut, Red Baron, Mercy Mercy), some R&B influence (eg. Just the Two of Us, What's Going On), some contemporary (like Jack Johnson) and a bunch of originals that range from jazz to contemporary...

    Official Barefaced Bass Cab Club

When I made my first Barefaced purchase, timezone/location definitely was not a major factor to me. Calling the UK from America (Pacific Time) and getting all the interaction and information I needed took staying up late all of once, which was a valuable conversation for me to figure out what...

    Official Barefaced Bass Cab Club

I highly recommend reading all of the great material on Barefaced's website. The information delves as deep as you want to go and you will come away feeling a lot better educated on that aspect of your gear. That really helped me before making my first purchase years ago. Edit: Also, if you're...

    Official Barefaced Bass Cab Club

This past weekend I finally got over to guitar center to get another Neutrik cable and hook up both cabs to my Mesa M9... and the results were unbelievably good! For over a year, I've been playing in various live situations with just the M9 and the BB2. In any indoor situation, it cut through...

    Fodera Club Part XXVII

I had an initial issue with my new Fodera which required some fret work. That was months ago. Since then, I've taken my baby everywhere, even as hot as 90 degrees outside. I routinely tweak the truss and keep it at 0.014" @ 8th fret. It plays incredibly well! The bass is super stable and the...

Horrible A String Rattle - tried everything

    1. Look down the neck from the tuner end at the bridge saddles and make sure they are adjusted in height such that they are perfectly straight and not tilting, or this may cause a buzz 2. If a string buzzes while depressing fret 1, 2 or 3, you need to add more relief to the truss rod (lose). Do...

Mesa Strategy and Prodigy discontinued. Also PH cabs.

I have an Eden Glowplug with a 12AX preamp tube in it, but it takes 15V (so you have to use its own plug) and it isn't true bypass. Frankly I don't mind removing it from my pedal board, the M9 Carbine gives me some great tube pre-amp warmth. As a middle-aged bass player, that tube pre is hard to...

Is the Subway's voicing knob the same tonal profile as the voicing knob on the M6/M9 Carbine?

Mesa Stopped Making M9 Carbine, all Subway?

Thanks for bringing me up to speed Wasnex! The main features I really love on the M9 are that graphic EQ and the compressor built in. But now I'm thinking I could accomplish a lightweight substitute with a Mesa EQ pedal and a Subway D800. The 800+ looks very tempting though!

Mesa Strategy and Prodigy discontinued. Also PH cabs.

Uh can I buy some tubes for my Carbine M9 for future security? And also, the D800 or the D800+ is on my list, I need a backup amp. I might just come back up to Petaluma and bug you guys again, since I really loved my first tour of the shop 2 years ago :)

Mesa Stopped Making M9 Carbine, all Subway?

I was just browsing Mesa's site, looks like the M9 Carbine isn't being made anymore. I noticed a new Subway amp, the D800+ which has a ton of tonal control. That 6 lbs sounds nice! Wondering if that thing can be adapted with rack ears to be placed into a standard rack. I love my M9 Carbine, but...

    Mesa Carbine M9 Rack

I went with a 3U to give it 1" of cooling, but then added a shallow Korg rack tuner. That was almost two years ago. Recently, I played an outdoor gig in +100 degrees F. Gain was at 11 o'clock, Master at 1 o'clock, single 8 ohm cabinet. The amp was pumping out some really serious heat! Based on...

Do you adjust your crossovers at all? Do you think you gain anything with the second cone? I'm hoping the BB2 + SM2 saves me some space and weight, gives me a little versatility and pushes enough air outdoors when paired together to make the guitarist feel inadequate with his stack :)

    Official Barefaced Bass Cab Club

And so, after a long awaited couple of years... Barefaced Cabinet #2 ordered!!! My BB2 has been just reliable and awesome as it was the day I bought it, but a Super Midget 2 will give me that boost I need for outdoor gigs. I started gigging with a working band part time and they've got stuff...

Do you ever hug the box of a new bass?

Yeah, I was summarizing. I see your raised eyebrow and feel compelled to answer it and write about this company that I now have more respect for than ever. This is my Fodera experience, and why I'm convinced that at some point in your life as a bass player, it's worth it to save money and own...

Do you ever hug the box of a new bass?

My new Fodera just came back to me from New York after getting an adjustment. I really missed it! The conventional wisdom and advice is to let the bass acclimate to the room in the box for 24 hours. This is to avoid cracks and problems with the finish after the bass has been on a plane at...

I went back up in count! Fodera Monarch Custom - 4 string Fender Jazz Elite - 4 string Ibanez ATK 305 (original 1996) - 5 string Breedlove Accousting bass - 4 string (this one gets picked up most by musicians visiting my place, they love grabbing this one and playing it)

    Anyone else develop "knob anxiety"?

Man I totally went the opposite direction! I bought a Fodera Custom shop with the Fodera/Pope Custom pre-amp. My musician friends (who absolutely love the bass by the way) have dubbed it "The Spaceship". But I love it, the controls are small knobs and short switches, perfectly accessible but...

    Jazz bass opinions

Dude sit in a music store for a while with a Fender Jazz Elite, which has a C-to-D neck. It gradually changes shape as you move towards the neck, and also the cutaway of the body at the neck joint gives full access to the highest frets without any effort. That innovation to me (the graduated...

Thanks guys! This piece of Macassar ebony is really special. I really wanted the theme of coffee and cappuccinos, you know those swirls and patterns you get in a good cup, so I knew I wanted ebony with some character and pattern to it. I went through several choices and really took my time...
