    Walking TH 350

I’m going to try some kind of mat. The I figure I could add Velcro to the mat and bottom of the amp if necessary. I bought this amp as a backup and practice amp quite some time ago. I don’t have a lot of gig experience with it. Lately I’m beginning to like it a lot better than my Streamliner...

Looking for a non invasive solution to keep an Aguilar TH 350 from walking off my SL12 cabinet. I’d rather not use any adhesive on the cabinet.

Songs that have unnecessarily hard parts

Unnecessarily hard parts? All parts are unnecessary in a way. It can certainly be beneficial to learn something note for note and that’s a personal preference . Playing the right notes but not getting the right feel/grove will sound worse than the other way around. It’s a band and the whole of...

I never wanted to sound like someone else...

Perhaps you like his look and attitude more than what he sounds like. Nothing wrong with that, most people hear music with their eyes more than their ears. Get a mirror and practice your look. I’m not a huge Ramones fan, but I appreciated them for their retro vibe and attitude. It’s rock & roll!

    Dead Zone?

Thanks to all for the info. I never thought of putting weights on the tuning keys which sounds like an easy and temporary way of experimenting. This dead spot is the worst I’ve ever encountered but it’s not something I might even notice if I don’t play a half note on that D. I don’t have a lot...

    Dead Zone?

yeah, I’ve read about dead spots but I’ve never had one that bothered me. This one bothers me. I’ll definitely try a different string, but I’m fairly sure it’s a dead spot and perhaps adhesive tire balancing weights will make it more tolerable. I still wonder why it wouldn’t affect the same note...

    Dead Zone?

I haven’t tried that yet. I will soon. I figure any old G string will do to experiment.

    Dead Zone?

I’ve got a fretless EBMM Sterling 4H strung with TI flats. I played this same combo (different Sterling) for years with no issues. My new Sterling has very noticeable lack of sustain on low D on the G string. The strings are 9 months old with maybe 100 hours on them. Give me some info on dead...

How to approach choosing my bass?

I agree that you should play what you’ve got unless what you’ve got is grossly deficient (doubtful.) It’s fun to buy new stuff, but it’s a trap and a waste of money and focus. Keep trying new basses whenever possible if you want, but don’t buy one for the foreseeable future. It’s difficult to...

    Sterling Musicman Bass

My dead spot is D on the G string. I’m probably too insensitive to notice or care about such things usually, but this one is really bad. The decay of that note is about twice what it should be. Almost as if there’s a foam mute. I’m going to mess with weights and/or the neck joint to alleviate...

    Sterling Musicman Bass

Assuming that they’re water slide decals, there’s a layer of clear varnish over them. So sanding or paint remover would be the only option. It’s funny that you say that Sterling solved the dead spot issues. I never noticed dead spots on any bass for 50 years or so but now I’ve got a MM Sterling...

    Thin G string sound

Well, what’s wrong with what you’re doing? Might you want that G string to be thinner and more clear sometimes and darker other times? That’s part of being a stringed instrument. It can be used to your advantage.

    How long?

3 years isn’t that long of a time. You haven’t burnt out, you’ve only walked around the block on a journey around the world. There are a lot of people that seemingly play bass for a long time without ever playing with other musicians. I’m not being judgmental, but that concept is unimaginable to...

No strings will “diminish” sound quality. All strings will alter sound quality. It’s an endless road of possibilities.

    Alembic F-1X needs repair....

I had an F1x and it used to drastically lose volume while playing. Then it would just as suddenly return to full power. Turns out that Alembic got a bunch of bum 1/4” jacks in the effects loop. Try plugging something into the effects loop and see if it works better.

Why is G soooo bright on many flat wound sets?

How long do you leave these flats on your bass? I find that flats can take months to really break in. For me, Labella DTF 760 strings do a great job for getting that even old school tone. But you have to give them a chance to settle down.

jumping to active 5 strings... multi scale or normal?

I’ve unsuccessfully tried to transition to 5 string basses 3 times over the course of 45 years. I was unsuccessful because I’m an impatient, lazy, old pos. I could never get the low B string to sound good to me so playing say low E on the B string didn’t pan out. I’m sure it’s my problem...

    Rickenbacker basses

They’re Iconic. They arguably have an unsurpassed cool factor. They’re somewhat unique tone wise and the newer 4003s with the switchable tone cap are pretty versatile. They’re ergonomically challenged, especially if you’re used to a Fender like bass. They can vary tremendously from bass to bass...

Ding in finish - my bad

Seriously, you could probably drill the screw out. You don’t care if you ruin the knob and if you drilled into the shaft a little it wouldn’t hurt anything. Might actually hold the new set screw in better. Just don’t drop the drill on it. Maybe a table is in order 😃

TI Jazz Rounds are dangerous. Heed my warning.

They’re too loose for me and I’m a TI flat fanatic. Recently I tried a set of TI rounds and didn’t like them. I have used them in the past on fretless basses and got along with them for some time but eventually moved on. They’re not aggressive enough to me. Very smooth sounding. And I couldn’t...

    Why do I stuck live?

Years ago i played with this guitar player who often said before the gig started: “I’m not going to make any mistakes tonight!” This was a sure fire way to make plenty of mistakes and then beat himself up over it.

    Why do I stuck live?

It’s a whole different trip playing with real people. You’re not just playing a line, you’re making a song. All the parts must strive to make a whole. There are bands that play songs note for note ,but in my experience, most of them fail to some extent. In my mind, grove is king and trumps “the...

How useful is the Kubiki Drop D extension?

It’s great. Better than a regular drop tuning key. I had difficulty fretting the low Eb which was an actual fret even though it was a fretless bass. However, I seldom wanted that low Eb, so I probably just never got used to it. My only other issue with it was forgetting it was engaged. You can...
