  1. Tuners reverse vintage style

Comment by 'insomehonkytonk' on the classified ad 'Tuners reverse vintage style'

A little off topic but just because subsequent reissues didn’t have the indentations doesn’t mean originals didn’t. Reissues also added a strap button to the headstock that doesn’t appear on early original models. The indentations were made at the factory with tools on original precision basses...

I like Fender Flats...what else might I like?

You might like GHS Brite Flats, I intend to try them out on a new build. Many different gauges to choose from.

Are GHS Precision Flats the closest thing to stock Fender flats of the 60's?

What’s the difference? My AVRI 1954 bass came strung with the 45-100 and I like the tone but prefer 105/110 sets for extra tension.

Are GHS Precision Flats the closest thing to stock Fender flats of the 60's?

Suffice it to say GHS Brite Flats which are ground wound are the closest to the original 50s P Bass strings?

Help me pick a flatwound for my "bright" maple P-bass

Try La Bella Low Tension Flats, less expensive than TI flats, yet plenty flexible. Or Curt Mangan Flatwounds, they’re just nice strings comparable to GHS flats which I also like.
  8. insomehonkytonk

Which strings do you use/like/prefer on your P Bass?

Favorite personally would be GHS 3050 regular gauge flats. The tension lets me get the action super low and the wrap is tight for a smooth string feel. Piano like. Curt Mangan Flatwound strings, unique in that they don’t have silk on the ends. Wish they offered a heavier gauge, these are...

Post Your '51-55 Precision or Tele-inspired bass

Never got around to posting my 54 transition blackguard inspired build that was completed a couple years ago. MJT body, nitro over poly Fender neck. SCPB-1, Luxe brown .1UF brown phone book cap, 15K resistor. Just wish it had turned out more blonde, so I’m going to have it repainted Surf Green...

    My Psychobilly Bass Guitar

This leads me to believe that mine has the bridge pickup installed in the neck position because it is curved.

    My Psychobilly Bass Guitar

It feels like a nine pounder and a little neck divey, a very wide strap helps this. The allparts neck feels great, P bass nut width, 9.5 radius and medium jumbo frets. The neck pocket was a little too large for the neck which was a concern assembling the instrument. However, it came out rock...

    My Psychobilly Bass Guitar

I haven’t played in the genre (hard to find band situations) but it’s name was most inspired by Johnny Cash’s “One Piece at a Time” psychobilly Cadillac

    My Psychobilly Bass Guitar

It sounds like how a P Bass should! The pickup is very transparent and adds little to no coloring. Strung with LaBella flats. I honest wqs expecting a a different sound due to the Thunderblade’s reputation but it’s just a very honest pickup. Very full sounding.

    My Psychobilly Bass Guitar

The body is a Jomo custom made 54 style with TV Jones pickup rout in the traditional neck position (unlike a Cabronita or CS Proto bass). Capri orange satin nitro finish. String through (small ferrules), top rout control cavity. Cabronita bass 1 ply white pickguard, .090 in thickness. Vintage...

    Thumpiest P pickups

For “thumpy” pups look into Klein 1958s, Arcane 57s. Have used both with great success. I would stick to Alnico V magnets. GHS precision flats, tone rolled off, palm muting or some foam for note decay. LaBella LTFs are perfectly fine in fact possibly better because of the lower string tension...

Fender Bass VI/Danelectro Bass Six/Schecter Hellcat Strings Discussion

Am also looking for flatwounds for my 90s MIK Danelectro UB-2. I read that La Bella can customize the "speaking length" of their Bass VI set to 32" to accommodate the 30" scale Danos since discontinuing the Hellcat set, has anyone had success lately?

Possible to keep Nitro looking pristine…?

Depends on the kind of paint and the thickness of it. MJT type of finish is formulated and sprayed to check, craze, chip and wear through. My Classic Series Lacquer 50s P Bass has a soft finish but there’s a lot sprayed on there and has no checking of any sort. I have read that the amount of...

    Warm And Smooth Sounding Flats

When I first played the LTF4A on a Jazz Bass I thought they played sloppy, like spaghetti, weak tone, and this was after mostly playing GHS regular gauge on a P Bass. I restrung a P Bass with my set and they felt and sounded much better and I was very pleased. A slight adjustment of technique...

    Warm And Smooth Sounding Flats

My PB-57 is strung with GHS 3050s which are 55-105. My Vintera P Bass has La Bella LTF4A and my 54 style bass has the La Bella 0760M 1954 “Jamerson set” which are 52-110. I’ve played Curt Mangan flatwound bass strings and found them to be very good and rich in tone.

If it was the NP4V in Alnico 3, yes. I just acquired an SD Antiquity Raised A that will go in an MJT "1959" build. Decided to keep the stock pickup in the Vintera, for now.

POLL: Ashtrays & Pickup Covers -- Do You Play With Them in Place?

I always have them on when playing. I typically playing wearing long sleeve shirts or a jacket that would otherwise come in contact with the strings if I did not have both covers on. I also employ some type of foam mute that fits under the ashtray. I can rest my hand on the pickup cover since I...

    Round wounds vs flat wounds

Flats have the thump. I do not like bright, zingy strings. And there is plenty of variety within the world of flats. My preferred are GHS 3050s, La Bella 0750 and LTF-4A, and Curt Mangan Flatwounds.

Have the La Bella 1954 0760M-TB through body flats been discontinued?

Historical aspirations for one, but the bridge is string through only.

What is your Criteria for not taking a Gig?

I accepted a gig three hours away as a hired gun because I really liked the band. Gas would have ate most of the $150 pay but would have been worth it for me.

Have the La Bella 1954 0760M-TB through body flats been discontinued?

I can't seem to find them for sale online anymore and I think the last set I purchased was on the TB store, wondering if La Bella has discontinued them.
