Why does my Jazz Bass eat strings?

Neck is probably too soft and compliant. Put same strings on different bass and see.

    50's style P-bass pickup replacement

I don't know exactly what you call "stock strings". Yes, some manufacturers send basses with these on and they're quite common.

Why did the J never dethrone the P?

Yes, definitely anecdotal. I totally see someone who lives in the US having the idea that the P is very widely used, but that's not the case at all in most countries where younger players do not exactly play or want to play rock. And most music around the world nowadays has a low B, which is...

Why did the J never dethrone the P?

This entire thread is based on a fallacy. Vast majority of basses used by players worldwide are J's or J clones.

Why did the J never dethrone the P?

Super J 5's are probably the most used basses in the world.

    NBD: S. Martyn 30" Fluence 5. Astonishing!!

Great looking bass. That looks like his Blaze model, though. He's been making great instruments for a while now with several options of scale length, including fanned. I did try a 5 string fanned Blaze last time I visited his shop and it was one of the best basses I've ever played. Few...

    Fender: Vintage or Custom Shop?

CS's are more consistent, but some pré-CBS do have that something else. Without trying out first, I'd get a CS.

Phil Jones speaker cables - worth it?

It's funny reading this thread so many years after I started this one: Who else thinks Phil Jones missed it? And the guy even PM'd me with threats or whatever. 13 years later...

Phil Jones speaker cables - worth it?

There's a catch here... His manual never says that a good cable, generic or different brand will "impair the performance of your system". It simply says that using inferior cables will, which is true... The power of marketing.

Some real talk about Pickup Placement.....

I do understand this perception from someone who lives in a country where rock is what most bass players play and grow up watching their idols play. But there's only a few of these countries in the world. Cor-Tek and Samick probably being the largest builders on Earth, you'll probably see a...

Some real talk about Pickup Placement.....

I will have a hard time trying to provide proof to what I'm gonna say, but I don't think that's the case at all, even considering the fact that P basses are much more popular today than 15 years ago or so. Well, you may be right if we're talking 14 year olds who just purchased their first...

    New Precision Fanned from S.Martyn

Wazzup guys, We run a Brazilian bass forum and forum member Edu Fettermann ordered a new S.Martyn few months ago. He just shared pictures of the finished bass and it's a beauty. Just some old bass porn for the win. Thought some of you would like it. Samuel is the go to guy here for anyone...

    S. Martyn , Modern Ray 5 string

Another tiny beauty: His short scale basses sound mighty for their size and you always have the fanned option and it's benefits. I personally like the 32-35" combo, but have played thru other length combos, like 29-32" and it was exquisite.

    S. Martyn , Modern Ray 5 string

Was speaking with Samuel the other day about his new model, the Little Man. It's a tiny bass with 28" scale, headless design and custom pickup and electronics to sound in the realm of a Stingray, even with the shorter scale. I haven't seen it in person but should be able to visit Rio after the...

    CAD Fretboard Builder

I remember the guys from Fodera years ago mentioning 9.5 on nut and 20 on bridge for the 4 stringers or something like that. End of fretboard would be close to 16. I'd say most mention nut and end of fretboard, but have seen nut and bridge on a few occasions. Just found this, actually...

Glad to see these basses here on TB. Samuel isn't even 30 years old, but he's been on it for over 20 years. Extremely nice guy and very talented. He probably makes the nicest short scale basses I've ever seen. Probably ordering one soon. Full sized models are great as well.

    Samuel Martyn Modern Ray

A bit late, but yes, I do. Samuel is a good friend of mine for many years. We actually worked together on his first fanned bass prototypes back in 2011 and I have the first of his fanned basses here with me. He's a very skilled luthier. Very young too, not even 30. He started working with...
