Über-Jay V Spalted Maple

Quick pre-Xmas update.

Since last post I have been mostly busy making new prototypes for the anchor bits and different applications for the logo. Being a designer by training these tasks are particularly enjoyable and a monster PITA :p

Both are coming up nicely though and I should get a delivery of the anchor bits before new year.

At the same time I've been busy nailing down the details of the next builds. One starts at the beginning of January, another other one as soon as I get the graphite neck. Yes, the same graphite neck I said I had ordered back in August..... :rollno:

About the build at hand, the fingerboard is now sanded down to a nice shine - with micro-mesh. After it's finished with oil, the grain that is barely visible now will be almost gone.

The neck will be lacquered clear. It's now sanded to 500 grit. More than it is needed, but I just can't help it ;)

Thank you all for your nice words and support.

Merry Christmas!! :bassist:

How do you intend to handle this? On mine, I slotted and then oil finished, trying to keep the slots open, but in the end I let them fill up, and re-sawed them.

It might be easier to do with very light oil coats. I was going heavy.

Today i cut the nut slot. The nut is Tusq, very nice material to work with. I will sand it down to a slightly smaller size and a more rounded, smoother shape.

Later I will shape the area where the veneer meets the fingerboard.

Thanks for following this buid :)

These should be fairly easy to find. I buy them from a local shop. Those I use for the p-ups instead are more of a pain and I order them online from J&R Hobby, among the others. Still looking for a local supplier............. :scowl:

I really like those inserts and was wondering which size you used for the pickup screws? I went to the site and they have three sizes listed: 2-56, 4-40 and 6-32. Also, where did you get the corresponding machine screws?

Such attention to detail...Very nice! I can't wait to see a video of the finished bass! ;)

Thanks! I'll do my best to oblige before Rök and I go separate ways :scowl:

4-40 is what I use. Is the right size for screws that fit the p-ups holes. I got the machine screws at a local hardware shop.

I'm a little late to comment on this, but that looks great. How did you cut those and keep them so symmetrical?

I'm also wondering how deep the recess is for your bridge. I plan on using a Hipshot for a bass that I am building. I routed my recess before receiving the bridge and I'm a little concerned that I went too low and I only went down 0.15".

Thanks! I marked the center lines and the top and lower edges with a pencil. I used a Dremel free hand for most of the work, then sandpaper glued to a small wood of the right diameter.

The recess below the tuners is 0.67" from the base of the bridge to the bottom of the recess. It should be plenty, especially when you consider that is the tip of the tuners the part that one is likely to use.
