$1 in jukebox

A naive question, perhaps, but is there someone here that actually knows the business, and can tell me if the bar owner can actually call shots on the parameters of the digital library loaded into the machines(I assume those are just giant iPods, essentially)or do they just take what’s given to them?

I'm pretty sure businesses can pick if they want. I know the Buffalo Wild Wings around here has chosen to not put quite a bit of music onto their TouchTunes machine (songs that exist on many of the other machines in the area).

I once worked at a place with a jukebox--it was an oddity & rarity around here at the time--and they knew which songs people paid to listen to & which ones they didn't
But when they came to change discs I often tried to convince them to take certain ones out & some to not put in at all.

You’re in a bar with a jukebox and you get 4 songs for a dollar. If you piss off more than 1/3 of the bar, you’re 86ed for life. What do you play?

Go.
I was in a rock band in '70 & we played at a speakeasy in North Philly. The crowd were older folks, so we played it safe & stuck to blues songs. We were dying when our singer (a brother who was shirtless, heavy, & wore a Mohawk - this is in 1970, mind you, got frustrated & said, "We've been trying to play for you, but since you're not interested, we'll play for ourselves & if you don't like it, fu*k you" and we broke into "Jumping Jack Flash". A woman did a war whoop, snatched off her wig & started grabbing men off their stools and making them dance with her! After that, it was a party for all! When the next band came in, they had equipment that we only dreamed of. But when they started playing, they were playing two chord R&B riffs, mostly in the same key. We were waiting outside to be paid (we never were) and people were leaving and stopping by on their way out saying we never should have stopped playing. That one woman changed everything! Crazy, but that's how gigs can go!

Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini - Bryan Hyland

Go your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac

Take it on the Run - REO Speed Wagon

Rock'N Roll - Gary Glitter

4 crap songs - crowd will love them

(I actually like Rock'n Roll - its stupendous stupidity puts it over the top)

Or play any cliche driven nonsense by Bon Jovi and your in.

Based on my former life in sleazy bars:

1. Rocky Mountain Way - Joe Walsh
2. Tush - ZZ Top
3. Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynrd
4. Brown Sugar - Strolling Bones, gotta have a Stones track

I think that any properly drunken bar crowd would probably buy me a beer for choosing so well!

A friend of mine told me he was playing a bar gig on a back patio by a lake. The place had a reputation for for being pretty rough. Well apparently, the crowd didn't like the tunes the band was playing. Mid song, some biker dude walks up to the band, picks up the guitar player's amp and chucks it off the patio into the lake.

Do I have to spell it out any clearer?

Play 4 songs.
Don't be an ***.
An average bar crowd.

What do you play on the jukebox?

Did I drive to the bar, or take a cab?
Are you supplying the money for the jukebox?
Is it a jukebox that plays records, or one of the new digital units?
What time does the bar close?
How many people are in the bar?
Do I know the people in the bar?
Do I like the people in the bar?
Are you paying for my drinks during this experiment?

The answer is "No."
