10 gigs of ram.

For those of you contemplating a RAM upgrade on your PC (as opposed to an Apple), remember that you'll need a 64-bit OS for the system to recognize all of it. The system I'm on right now has four gigs of DDR2, but the OS (XP Pro 32-bit, SP3) only recognizes 3.25 gigs.

Having said that, I'm not positive if/what Windoze 7 will do, but I'm rather sure it'll be similar.

All 32 bit PC OS' only support 3.25 gigs of memory.
Including win 7 32 bit.

And most programs are written for 32bit kernels and will only use that much ram so for the most part over 4gb is over kill in most standard user situations.

the reason for the memory limitation is that a 32 bit architecture can only recognize 4 gigs of unique memory addresses (2^32 different unique addresses). the system cannot access memory it cannot uniquely identify. the top portion of the memory is used for accessing video ram, and whatever is left over is available for the system ram. depending on how much video ram you have, your system ram will vary - if you only have 256 meg of video ram mapped, you will have 3.75 gig of system ram.

as far as what a program is written for, most memory-intensive programs worth a spit will use the video drivers to govern video memory resources as well as whatever runtime resources/environment they operate in to manage system ram, and therefore if the 64 bit driver or runtime is written with "legacy code support" in mind, it should have no problem mapping the program's output wherever it needs to, even above that 4 gig barrier.

this is where you get incompatibility between older software and 64 bit os'es, though. their runtime environments and drivers are either not well written or have not been updated to allow for system-control of resource allocation. programs might be written around now-discontinued driver or runtime functionality, but this is a sign of poor coding design in general, and not just a benchmark of 32 bit code. of course, it also depends on the program. if its old it might have its runtime integrated into its executable, so that it cannot be updated to support 64 bit environments.
 
he's talking about pae, physical address extension. -that's- going to mess with a lot of drivers, moreso even than 64 bit OSes, since enabling it totally changes how physical memory is accessed by the os. in a nutshell it halves the number of potential memory locations in the 32 bit memory page table and doubles their address size. an extra handler has to be added to handle this, which affects performance adversely.

note, this also does not open up as many memory address locations as a true 64 bit OS could handle (which is 2^52 iirc, since the highst 12 bits of the address are used for flags and os stuff). especially on windows, where there are constraints placed even on pae due to driver compatibility and licensing concerns.
