I installed 12 GB of RAM in my Mac Pro. I've never seen it use more than 7.

.I am running 512mb on my macbook still. It still runs decently fast, but I keep it nice and clean. Unfortunately I have to buy a PC to run autocad on, but that will have at least 4gigs if not more.

Well, this post passed it's way through... wait for it.... 256MB of RAM!!! That reminds me, I need an upgrade. 
I think it should be a government responsibility to grant every man at least 10 GB's of RAM. We'd be a happier nation, or, a happier world! Have you ever heard Talibans in Afghanistan rocking 10 GB's? Nope, it's pretty obvious to me that a man who has 10, doesn't care to don an AK

4GB of DDR3 in the laptop, along with the OS and apps on an OCD Vertex SSD (data is on a separate HDD). I'll be doubling the ram, hopefully after Christmas.
For those of you contemplating a RAM upgrade on your PC (as opposed to an Apple), remember that you'll need a 64-bit OS for the system to recognize all of it. The system I'm on right now has four gigs of DDR2, but the OS (XP Pro 32-bit, SP3) only recognizes 3.25 gigs.
Having said that, I'm not positive if/what Windoze 7 will do, but I'm rather sure it'll be similar.

All 32 bit PC OS' only support 3.25 gigs of memory.
Including win 7 32 bit.
And most programs are written for 32bit kernels and will only use that much ram so for the most part over 4gb is over kill in most standard user situations.
