10 song audition

I'm thinking members of a forming tribute band should already know the entire black sabbath catalog, or at minimal only need to go thru the song once before auditioning. Do it some some justice. 10 Sabbath tunes should be nothing to sweat.

Im just trying to find a fun band to play with. As to their knowledge of the Sabbath catalogue that remains to be seen. Ive always been a big geezer fan but Im realizing that after really looking through the music I've been playing "fudged" versions all these years. Im trying to nail this one note for note.
As far as the Ozzy stuff goes, im not familiar with the bassist and the style is waaaay different! IMO, Geezer would have never written that (cheesy) verse riff on crazy train. Probably would have found a way to cram a blues scale in that A major Lol

The way I see it, 2 hours is decent, if not short. More time to get to know the guys and chat some. Bring some free booze, let them have at it and see who gets wasted 1st, you staying sober of course.

Everyone--and every band---is different, of course... but I'd be turned off as a BL if an auditoner showed up with booze. And this is definitely long for an audition, in my opinion. No one will learn anything in hour two that they didn't know in hour one.

Learning all/most of the songs would most likely ensure you have the gig.

Worked for me, I was asked to learn 1-2 songs from a band's album for an audition. When I showed up knowing the whole album they canceled the remaining auditions.
A good policy to learn it all given the time. But you might not have been the only one to have done that- can you imagine being one of the other bass players hitting it hard, learning all the songs, waiting to audition and thinking 'they are gonna flip when they see I know all the songs!' Phone dings "We won't be holding any more auditions, we have found our guy, good luck out there" FFS!

I agree! I will probably know within the 1st 3 songs whether I like them or not. I don't really have the resume or experience to be calling the shots so I will jump through hoops for now just to get my foot in the door. Plus, in the past I have flubbed auditions because of nervousness, somebody really good ahead of me or a bunch of guys waiting behind me. The amount of time leaves enough to do all the songs twice. I'm hoping the extra time will help me calm my nerves and if I mess up the 1st go around hopefully I get a second shot. I really just want to get out of the shed and start playing with other humans

I've been asked to choose 10 songs from this list to audition for an Ozzy/sabbath tribute. I politely asked the BL "why ten?" His response was "to fill the 2hr rehearsal studio spot" So im assuming I will be the only one auditioning...?
I have been given all the time I need to prepare, he basically said "learn the stuff and let me know". That was last week and I would say I have 4 or 5 "ready" so I called him today and set the date for thurs next week....fingers crossed.

Which 10 would you pick?

I don’t know
Crazy train
NIB
Paranoid
Children of the grave
Symptom of the universe
Lightning strikes
Bark at the moon
I don’t wanna stop
Sweet leaf
Fairies wear boots
Black Sabbath
Into the void
Electric funeral
Iron man
You can’t kill rock n roll
Suicide solution
Steal away the night

Since you are going to need to learn the entire list and giving the fact they were given in this order
I would learn the first 10 it is most likely the order of the their current set list

I would think paraniod opens...in true sabbath fashion no? Or crazy train is perfect..."allllll abooooooard ha ha ha" I think closing with sweet leaf is meh...If I get in I will suggest War pigs to close the set, that or iron man. Have no idea why its not on the list yet.

So....update! I spoke with BL again today to confirm and he pushed it a few days until next weekend. So I may end up learning a few more to throw in like Fairies.

Also, I realized I never asked about the previous bass player(s). The response was basically that he was "mostly a jazz guy" and left the group on good terms. I took that as more a comment on his look/stage presence because if you're playing covers then the notes are the notes right? I play jazz but can also dig in hard and get that nice clank going like geezer too.

May I add that a few months ago I changed to DR Black Beauty strings, heaviest gauge available (.110 to .50).

Not only do they feel and sound fantastic...Geezer uses them. ;)

One step ahead always!!!! Im using the rotosounds though!
