$100 4 string challenge

Hey how about one of you make "Token bass" from South Park?

I found this episode one of funniest - and not racist at all - more like a nod to all black musicians who brought some serious groove to the planet. Plus a bass looks cool and funky so why not haha.

Although I would argue that you were dead in the water anyway, depending on how you interpret the rules, since a good used G&L neck probably has a street value of over $100. Same with the Light Wave system.

Been watching to see this develop

I could certainly build something with scrap I have laying around. I have a neck from a build that has an blemish, so I could use that, I have left over electronics from other builds, and I even have tuners left over.

I would say that using all of this may be within the rules, but certainly not in the spirit.

OK to get past that, I could source cheap parts, but that would just be wasted money, as I would immediately throw the stuff away afterwards. Not to mention the re-work. So to me, it's a waste of time and money.

On the other hand, I would like to entertain the notion of joining in

So then I think to myself, If I go over budget, am I automatically disqualified?
Maybe if I go over budget I just get deducted points.

Again, I think to myself what's the judging criteria?
Do I get points for meeting certain criteria?
Originality, esthetics, playability, quality of construction, ingenuity?

Too many questions for me right now

Word! I am using this as an excuse to fulfill some desires of my kids. If this was an actual competition I would have avoided it like the black plague considering the amazing talent on this forum. I would encourage you to take up the challenge only because of selfish reasons - I wanna see what you come up with! ;)

Wow, $33, that's quite a bargain. Is it any good?
It puts a damper on the fun when Asian mass produced components are cheaper than the raw materials to build it yourself.

If you end up using the Light Wave system, please post about it. I'm interested how that would look.

I am going to do the build, so Ill be sure to do a build thread, especially since the light wave will make it rather unique. I just couldn't find a set of cheapo tuners to make the build come out to $100, the rest of the hardware would be no problem.

Its going to need some fret work, but other than that its perfect. Of course the headstock will be reshaped and it will be refinished, but at $33 bucks I will keep buying them until they are no longer available. Why build a plain jane maple neck when you can get a quality one pre made for $33

It should be a collective vote. After the challenge is over, the final pics and links to the build threads should be posted in a separate thread with a pole to determine everyone's favorite. That's how they have all been done before at least.

i am in on this. I haven't started a thread yet, but will today (even though there will be nothing in it for a bit longer) :)
I may need help valuating some of my old parts lying around (they're close to junk), but i'll cross that road later. I'm well under $100 for now.
so end time is August? Is there an official end time?
this will be my first build, so the $100 margin is a great target for #1. I don't expect a ton, but have a cool idea, and have been wanting a 5 string for a long time.
I suspect after the contest, i'll be on the hunt for a pickup upgrade, but who knows!

Is it too late to join this challenge? I've been watching all the threads started for this so far but wasn't sure if i'd be able to get something together. I'm now pretty sure I will so......maybe i'll start a thread too?
